My understanding has always been that if indicators are fitted to the bike, then they must work, end of. I don't think that it is compulsory to have them fitted at all, no matter what year of manufacture.
Or am I way off here?

Any lighting "fitted" to a bike must be operational.......

...... as for winkers & the year fitted - not sure if they are compulsory :?: but might be as a front brake switch is after a certain date... I think :??

Pre 86 no indicators needed.
Post 86 manufacturers had to equip new machines with indicators that comply to BS standards.
LOOPHOLE - Any machine predominantly used off road or is a converted race/competition machine and has no passenger provision is exempt .
This is aimed mainly at trials and enduro machines etc that use the highway between sections but if you use (or say you use  ) your road bike for road class sprints, RWYB etc then you are ok.
My Zeph1r which is on a mid 90's plate has no indicators, rear pegs, chainguard, headlight etc is perfectly legal.

Minimum requirements are Brake light and Horn.

I'm presuming that's for a daytime 'race' MOT.....

Front brake light needed after 1984. Rear only before then.

Oh! My typo earlier .
Don't need reflector either so just brake light and horn.

Yes! Hours of daylight MOT.

No such thing as a "Daytime" MOT really.
Just a normal mot but you get an advisory certificate stating no lights fitted at time of MOT.
If you want to fit lights later you have to get a fresh MOT though .

My pal has a mid 1960's Matchless GL3 in trials trim - no lights whatsoever - no reflector or horn (ignition runs on a magneto only) and has a legit MOT

Been researching this as the regs seem to contradict themselves due to the convoluted wording so favoured by those who make all this up ( No suprise there  ) but YES! you can run with no lights at all not even a brake light.
Looks like you still need an audible warning device though, pre 73 a bulb horn and after that a device of constant tone i.e battery operated horn.

Don't need a speedo for the MOT but you do need one to be legal on the highway.

You don't actually need to remove the lights for a "daytime" MOT either just permanently disconnect and paint or mask over them.

Mental, aint it??

You'd think the MOT would make you legal on the road.

I can remember when I was a Vehicle Examiner with VI (now called VOSA).
I could issue a MOT cert in one hand and a prohibition notice (GV9 / PG9) in the other.

The situation that arose often that warranted this action was a retest for a lorry or bus. Only the items failed can be retested, however if ANOTHER defect was "found" whilst checking the retest items.
If the retest items were good it MUST pass.
But you cannot let it drive away with a dangerous defect, so a prohibition notice would NEED to be issued.

Again MENTAL, but they were the rules.
