Thanks for the help so far, it's comin together!
I am a newbie to spanners so the advice is much appreciated.
Now today i thought I'd adjust the camchain on my Z1000a2.
The info I read said that to do this, undo the lock nut from the bit sticking out of the back of the engine (viewed fom the petrol tap side), then the bolt.
Kick it over a couple of times.
This is supposed to take up the slack of the camchain.
Then do up bolt and then locknut.
I did this, but i don't know if its just me or it sounds more rattly than it did before???
Have i done the right thing or have i made a schoolboy error?

1. Remove tensioner locknut and bolt.
2. Slowly hand turn engine in direction of normal rotation.
3. Watch plunger through bolt hole as it moves back and forth.
4. note when plunger is at full inward travel (i.e taking up the maximum chain slack)
5. Stop rotating engine at this point and re-fit and tighten locking bolt and nut.

I Would check your cam timing, there is a chance you have jumped the timing cogs by kicking her over,where did you get that info?could cause damage if it has jumped,hope not! Cheers Paul J

if you follow the above instructions you should be ok. if your valve timing was out the motor would have been running rough or difficult to start

Do not try to rotate engine backwards.

You should be able to see TDC marks i mentioned in earlier post.
Take the points cover off right side of engine and push kick start gently watching which way engine rotates and on the of crank you will see a 13mm bolt head and behind that is a 17mm nut and fit your ring spanner on that to rotate engine,

engine rotation is clockwise. remove the locking bolt from the tensioner + use a torch to view the tensioner rod while you rotate the engine you should see a mark on the rod where the rod has been previously locked + when the tensioner rod is at its maximum towards the engine screw in the locking bolt + tighten the lock nut

blimey thats 2 now then any .i had to go round mark gb's place he other week to bail him out of the shit .he had read the same thing undo the lock nut back it off and kick it over .jumped 2 teeth .and he started it after it first lockup the motor .he said it sounded rough .once i had set it back up right ,it was sorted .he was very lucky .

Got lad to turn it over while I removed the bolt and peered into the hole with a torch.
Did as you suggested and locked it at the point it was furthest towards the engine.
Started it up and ...........
