Gentleman, I'm just about to refit valves to refurbished head (APE guides and seats recut), I know oil is supposed to go on these bits, but considering it's a full rebuild with engine super dry (cases blasted etc) should I use moly lube on valve steams ? Asking because that's the way to go as per my WR450 manual printed in 21st century, so maybe world has gone step forward ? Cheers
When i rebuilt the head on my z1 i assembled the valves with gear oil.I then gave them a further squirt with the oil can before start up.I just laid the rocker cover over the head for the initial start so as i could check for a good oil feed and then check the clearances after a couple of minutes running.
I think it is the zinc or possibly an other usefull element which has been removed from oils which causes pick-up problems with re-built engines designed to run with it. Everyone on the internet forums recommends lubriplate 105.

yes i use 105 on my race motors also around the bores when pistons go in and you can blob some on cam lobes.also lucas do some good engine build lube
dragracing, because it takes more than one ball !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've used Graphogen in every engine i've ever built (which is a lot in 30 odd years) .
This is pukka engine assembly compound and has been used by engine builders since moses was a kid.
Apply it to the piston skirts,Cylinder bores, valve stems, cam lobes ,bucket bores etc.
A tube will last for quite a few engines.

Thanks for the replies, I have BELLRAY assembly lube which is molybdenum based so will use it, but that GRAPHOGEN seems to be good stuff.
I'm also fitting new Wiseco 1075 pistons and bored/honed cylinders, am I right to think lubricating these with anything better than mineral oilt would prevent rings bedding in ? I was mostly concerned about lubricating valve stems/guides and cam lobes, here is WR450 manual screen that made me seeking advice here :

Have always used it on freshly bored cylinders with no problem.
It will sit in the troughs of the hones cut for lubrication but won't prevent the rings bedding in with the peaks.
If not already done, get the bores cork (plateue) honed.
This will give a higher initial compression and shorter running in time with less wear on the rings.
