...... or were original Kawasaki batteries always Black?....

Just looks unfinished, ie like it's missing a cover or something!.

Battery should be in black plastic battery tray.

Garry , I agree, back in '76 all batteries were black.
At the moment I have just fitted a yellow gel type battery and I must admit it looks awful from the side.

Of course, as Keefleaf says there was a half size black plastic tray that the battery fits in and this tends to cover the battery a bit.... I could never understand this, it has a hole in each corner to let the accumulated acid out.
It might just be there to make sure the battery is tightly secure.
