Tips for fitting Z650 centre stand spring please?

Hi Folks,
Expecting main stand back from coating next week - spring was dead tight to get off and I'm keen not to damage the stand or frame repaint when it goes back on. Anyone done this recently and worked out a good method - the 650 has a long spindle that goes through both sides of the stand from the same side as the spring which fits down the side of the stand.



Thought about prising some dowel between coils of the spring to open it a bit - could a big G clamp be adapted into a spring puller? Any ideas or pics of how you've done it would be most welcome. From Mark in Staffs.

Yep. Absolutely the only way to get both the side and centre stand springs back on is to bend the spring backwards and forwards loading it with washers until its lengthened considerably.

Great idea Kas, but up here in Scotland we would be afraid that the coins would be sprung out and lost for ever under the work bench !!!

I've always found it easy to attach the spring to both lugs then fit the pivot bolt(s) using the stand for leverage on the spring. But, the coin trick is a brilliant idea, I've never heard of that before.

Coins are too thick, use washers of various thickness to extend the spring and then fit it and pull the washers out with a pair of pliers when its on the bike.
If you use coins the edges will get damaged as they are softer than washers. I had a right game with my Z650 stands and I am sure that someone was having a laugh when they designed the springs.
