Z1 head/cams vs. KZ head cams

#1 PostAuthor: GregZ » Fri Oct 09, 2009 11:44 pm

Well my new to me 1978 kz1000 project is underway. The 26mm carbs will go to junk box and in place a set of 29mm smoothbores.
I plan freshing up the motor. Hopefully just new rings.
I have a 1974 Z1 head completly rebuilt new guides, seals 3 angle valve job and benched shimmed and of course Z1 cams. Ready to bolt on.
Is there any differance between the Z1 head and the 78 1000 head and cams?? I think I remember the Z1 cams are little better in performance then the kz.
Or should i just have the Kz head rebuilt??

Heads are interchangeable. I'd use your Z1 head. Check cam lobe faces for wear and pick the best.

I believe the exhaust studs are different sizes. The 1000 head will have 8mm where as the earlier heads would have had 6mm studs fitted, shouldn't be a problem though.
