That's the best I can do with uploading the pics. There's not much to see at the moment except the work required:
The engine and rear wheel hub had been painted black and what you see at the moment is the result after using a can of Nitromor paint stripper.
The rear seat hinge bracket has snapped at some stage and I'm going to fabricate something and weld into place.
The HT leads have been bodged onto the standard coils. Either HT lead connectors or new coils required.
The only major thing which will need doing is the gearbox which needs sorting out and was the reason I haven't ridden this one for a few years. hard to select second gear and also started jumping out of gear. I have some decent replacement selector forks. Hopefully, just a case of removing the sump rather than taking the engine out.
There is no picture of the exhaust shown which is somewhere in the house . It is a quite rare 70's Kerker race pipe which I have been saving for this bike.
Also, I know that the rear wheel spindle has been put in the wrong way with the nut on the wrong side. But I can not see any reason why it shouldn't be like this!

If shes jumping out of gear (2nd) its most likely the actual gear cogs (dogs) worn/burred.... so it engine out time
But.... you can do an engine split but leave the top end (pistons & head) alone

If you've got to do gearbox work it's far better to split the lump and go through it properly.

Thanks for the gear box problem info. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and hope it is the selector forks and not worn dogs. If not, I think I have finally got to the point where I have to do what I have to do with this baby! Not done gearbox before, but I don't think it is beyond me.
I'll be finsihed with the cosmetic stuff by next week and will stick in a battery and fuel and assess the problem properly before ripping it apart.
You will probably see quite a few pleas for help posted.

Update - six months on and all I have to boast about is that the missing seat hinge bracket on the frame has been replaced and a few bits polished. Not much I know but a darn sight more than the progress over the last 10 years.
Pics to follow.

The bopdged HT leads are sorted now thanks to Ginger bear for the Dyna coils. Checked the gearbox thoroughly and luckily it ;ooks as if it is just the selector forks. Just need to order new sump gasket and a couple of oil seals.
I'm determined to have the z900 sorted for the summer, although I recall expressing similar sentiments in previous years! Let's see how it goes.

Good luck with the rebuild Raf. Will probably end up costing more than you expected but values still seem high. Are you keeping it original?

Sorry, should have said 'reverting to original' as it has quite clearly been modded in the past....

sorry but that oil cooler with soldered on copper heating pipes looks like a disaster waiting to happen, and pretty crap too.

Had one of those coolers fitted to my bike. US aftermarket stuff.

Simon, I've collected loads of 70's aftermarket bits which I intend to stick on then 900 so it won't be reverting to standard.
The bike is an early Z900 A4 (206 th) off the production line and was purchased in Texas in 1998 when I got carried away and ended up buying a container of 40 70's bikes!
The oil cooler is a Derale US aftermarket product. It's not really needed for normal road use but looks interesting so may keep it on the bike.
