Returnof the Z - project

Hi people - The Z is now all in pieces so we can see what needs to be replaced. The frame is goin to have a good clean as are the wheels and forks. A list is bein drawn up so we can get an idea of what we are likely to need int the way of funds. We have already started collectin bits an pieces such as a full chrome indicator set and chrome shocks. Here's a couple of pics so far and we will post more as we go on. Also I don't doubt we are goin to be askin for loads of tech help such as HOW THE HELL WE GET THE ENGINE BACK IN cos we had one helluva job gettin it out. Cheers Mike an Jackie

Assuming you're pulling the whole thing down it's easiest to lay the engine on it's side and drop the frame over the top, as demonstrated here in Dogsbollox thread half way down this page... You can take them out the same way.

Tip: make sure there's no oil in it when you do this - either going in or coming out....

As Chris said its much easier laying the frame down over the engine on its side bolting it in then lifting it all upright with the frame. If you are getting the frame painted and are worried about scratching it then its also worth taking the cam cover off to give yourself a bit more room to play with.

Good to see that you have made a start. I'm doing a partial restoration on my Z900 A4 which I started last week. I will post some pictures of my z900 shortly after spending so much time looking at other peoples projects.
Is your bike an A4?

mike ,don't know if you knew but the front forks and caliper are z1 not a4
but its looking good

Just in case you were not aware, the front end of your bike is off a Z1 and not A4 - different fork bottoms, caliper and disc. Also worth knowing, the discs on the US models (single disc models) were thicker than the UK models if you decide to convert to twin disc set-up.

You need a 6mm front disc not 4.5mm.
I have a converted KZ1000 with basically 2 left disc's and a pair of Z900A4 calipers.

2 left discs ? Never knew right and left discs were different !

Thanks for the info - it appears to have odd wheel sizes (so I am told). Is this turnin out to be a bitsa bike???

I've never understood why Bitsa is used in a derogatory manner. You love her, she will look great ! I think it's great that you are able to share the experience with your second love :wink: :lol: :lol:

CB is rapidly becoming more bike orientated without any great push from me, which is making me very happy, though she draws the line at getting oil on herself/clothing :lol:

It really doesn't bother us if it is a bitsa - all i'm sayin is that we really appreciate all the info people are tellin us - we are newbies in the Zed world - havin said that we just can't wait to get it on the road and just ride ride ride - hence its definitely not goin to be a show n shine bike - ITS THE BIKE WE ALWAYS PROMISED OURSELVES (we are Ford Capri fans too!!!)

I've never owned or even driven a Capri, but I've always thought that they were well coooooool. Especially the earlier one with the bump on the bonnet :D

Joking aside I would strongly recommend that you chuck all the black bits eg frame swing arm, headlight shell, brackets etc in a big box and get them blasted and the powder coated. It cost me approx a hundred quid, but is well worth it as the finish is so much more hard wearing and resilient than regular paint.

Enjoy your resto ... there will be times when you think it'll never end ... but it will and you'll be soooooo proud of your bike in a way that you never can be with a bought bike :lol:

Enjoy and make sure you document your progress on here, we all love watching the progress of a project
