Bucket List stuff Harris for the SPA weekend !

#1 PostAuthor: KWACKERZ1 » Mon Jun 29, 2015 3:35 pm

Having been to the bikers classic at Spa a few years now, on my list of things to do was to ride a proper 80's endurance bike round there and the Harris is my obvious and first and only choice.

I was offered this in August14 through a friend (Rob at CBT ) who had a friend with a spare basic chassis.

Seat mounting by Heath robinson.

It was obviously a well used and battered Race bike and unfortunately enthusiasm and lack of business sense saw me purchase it for what was probably to much! But he ho!
The enthusiasm carried on and all my bikes I had used for track days previously and were all finished I sold. (it seemed like a good idea at the time!)

The bike is Magnum 2 chassis for a GPZ motor. (Again not a wise choice as I only had z1000 spares) GSXR slingshot front end and wheel and A ZRX Rear wheel in an unknown swing arm, but with a Maxton shock.

So got on with it ,

Never did figure out what this was for its some sort of non Harris frame Brace.

Went for a Red frame!

And swing arm.

The swinging arm is non standard Harris and we eventually guessed its a modified SV650 (at our best guess.)

I did have a Mk2 rough fairing though from another project.

But only had a zbutt seat initially.

Ruffle very kindly let me have a MK2 seat unit he had so I knew that I had to try and recreate that Magnum 2 look I loved from all those superbike mags in the 80's.

Next problem was sourcing an engine.

Marlin to the rescue and he came up with a brilliant 1260 tuned GPZ motor for me.

Z1parr provided an original Magnum Harris exhaust that I spotted around his place a couple of years ago.

Also GingerBear for the shim loan (and his patience whilst I f+%cked about)

So Z10c to the rescue all around!

Anyway back to the build and to be honest its been a trying road. Everything on Harris's needs to be made or fabricated to fit nothing bare nothing is off the shelf.
Even Harris parts for harris's have to be modified, like the fairing,

All was going well until January and an unfortunate incident with another bike knocked my enthusiasm for six and I stopped working on the bike.

However needs must and having sold everything else I had that was trackworthy I had to get my finger out.

The entries for Spa had to be in so I mocked the bike up for my entry photo's.

Anyway that's how the bike remained pretty much until this month and I knew after Anglesey I had to get my finger out.

So cracked on Built a wiring loom, (with provision for lighting etc if I decide to put it on the road at a later date)
Fired it up, once wired!
Then last week took the bike to a Dyno, to get the 33's setup.

The engine previously had 40mm FCR'S but I have fitted 33 Mikuni smoothbores (as thats what I had on the shelf)
Took a guess on the jetting and it seemed to run ok in the garage,

Last Thurs with a week until SPA,
Ran it at RJS Superbikes at Mallory on their Dyno Rob is a top bloke, and we adjusted the needles a slot, but it needed bigger jets for the top end.

well pleased though and it all held together fine.

The tank however which I had repaired though was another matter, I had paid, a not insignificant sum, to have it repaired previously and the main bit I wanted fixing was still leaking!!

Fork N Wheels in Leicester to the Rescue, Dropped it off Monday and got it back all fixed on Wed, top top job. (I love proper engineers who do what they say they will on time! They are a dying breed)

So into the last weekend with a big push to get the bike finished.
Changed the bodged discs, fixed the fork oil leak, new brembo master cylinder and bled all the brakes, fixed on the fixed and unpainted tank.

Stuck a rough and ready coat of paint on it and threw it together!

So thanks to all those who helped me get here, with parts as mentioned above, encouragement from Zorded, Chris at Grumpy1260and z-power for bits.

So wish me luck for Spa at the weekend which will be the first time its been ran in anger.

If your there come and say Hello we'll be in the F1 garage 19.
