Z1-R D1 Freshen Up

Have been working on the front brakes recently.
I marked the callipers and pistons so they didn't get mixed -


Got all my bits together now the new hoses have arrived -


Here's my finished efforts -



Which side of the offside brake hose does the tacho drive go ??
This is my attempt -


Was wary of bleeding up double disc for the first time, lots of bad press on here about cable operated master cylinder - but after some gentle pumping and a large syringe to pull some fluid down they have both come up well hard. Left like this overnight in case they need another go tomorrow -


Rear calliper off for refurb now

Rear brakes this week -

Calliper has been stripped, masked and painted -



After the disappointing new PMC rear brake hose (too long) I will run with this used one for now -



Have collected all the parts I need for the calliper rebuild whilst paint was curing -



Inner piston is at the end of the fluid run and does not get the same pressure as the outer one. This can lead to sticking so I locked off the outer piston with a G clamp and put the inner one through it's full travel a few times + brake cleaner spray to get it as free as possible.



Next stage will be fitting dust covers and pads etc. - then should be going back on bike for good this weekend with luck !!

Looking good, but get rid of the cable front brake for a handle bar master cylinder must safer unless it the originality you want. Susi SV 1200 fits

The bike came with the larger touring gas tank fitted.
It is more practical - but it does not follow the low slung lines of the original 13 litre tank.
That is SO LOW the gas cap had to be offset, and there is a breather pipe on the underside for fuel expansion / overflow.

We got a good original tank with the bike



So that went off to the painters with some other new panels that I wanted to replace. First step was to take a template for the pinstripe positioning.



Then it got chemically stripped to make sure there were no filled dents etc.



Here it is after a rub down - no filler needed thankfully.



Then it got 3 different primer stages with wet sanding between stage 2 & 3



Then it was time for the top coats, with some body color on the inside of the fairing and under the tank.



The pinstripes were re-applied via Air Brush ( the originals were stick on with overlap joints at each corner on the fender).



The panels are just getting lacquered and curing now and we should be getting them back on Bank Holiday Monday. Will post something more about it then.

Looking braw.

I collected the new paintwork and the samples which were color matched today. Lee has done a great job copying the paint shade from the good rear panels onto the new front ones.

Here is my complete paint set



The new ebony fender has now gone silver for 1978, so has the new PMC fairing. The under screen rubber trim is good to re-use and we got a NOS rear rubber trim strip from Holland.



This was the spare tank that came with the project.

These panels are all good enough to re-use. Matching the existing shade saved the cost of a complete paint set being re-sprayed.



Now I have to re-fit all the missing bits and underseal the new fender before it gets fitted.

I think the plan will be to stick her on eBay for strong money when the resto is finished for this season.

If it doesn't make a good figure I will keep and take to our new home in the Cotswolds this summer.

Frank made over £4k each on my last two that he bought so I am not in a hurry to lose that again.

I am pretty happy that it will end up better than any I have ever seen on eBay. Just not up to the standard of some of the lads on here - who will never part with them. They are plastered in NOS goodies.

I did a test fit of the panels today before I took the tank back off to fit the sender and tap etc.

I think Lee has done me proud on the paint

I have a new seat foam coming from Japan this week - then I can build a restored seat unit back up for it. The other parts are ready and waiting.

... and a new silencer with clamp & bracket to set off the restored collector box.

That bracket will give me the bung to park the main stand correctly - then I can lose the pipe lagging damper.

So it's getting close now - then SKAG had better watch out

Not really Paul. While I'd love a Shed, I need one that I can 'add' too and Marks looks pretty perfect to me.

Mark. Unless you know what the buyer actually paid I wouldn't be so certain he got what he asked for.
A friend in the trade says he is a good guy to deal with and certainly between them will be happy to make a small profit.

It's all about churn.
