Aztec's ST1000/1105 Special

#1 PostAuthor: Aztec Warrior » Sun Jan 25, 2015 12:57 pm

Hi,

Having finally sussed out Photobucket, thanks in no small part to Zordeds excellent tutorial here, I've managed to get some stuff edited and posted.
I joined this forum in October 2014, the day after buying this KZ 1000ST, and at the same time, I joined the Z1OC too.
Having been looking for a Big K within my budget, with plenty of Z650's on offer, very unexpectedly, this ST turned up on eBay on Monday 13th October. I read all the details, liked what I saw and made an offer within 5 minutes.
Accepted some 3 minutes later, a 20 minute phone call to the seller, and the deal was done and a deposit secured it.
Imported from California in 1993, declared manufactured 1979, it's had two UK owners, both in the South Wales area.
According to all the documents that were passed to me, it was a bog standard machine, with mileage in the sub 20k range, until being 'transformed' into this Alien v Predator creation, which took place over a period of time, from approximately 2005-2009. It's last m.o.t expired in May 2011. Put on SORN for 3 years, a new m.o.t was in place only four days before my offer was accepted.
On Saturday 18th October 2014, I 'trained and bussed it' to Reading Services, where the ST was transported, by a trailer, from it's previous home in Cardiff. The seller only charged me £50 for transport. A pile of cash changed hands and I was left with the Zed, a box full of spares and a large folder of paperwork. Job nearly done.
Road Fund License changes (under the new law/rules, brought in on 01st October 2014), mean NO vehicle can be sold with tax and MUST be taxed before going back on the road, by the new keeper.
My mate living in Reading, conveniently, came with me to the Services. He caught the bus back to town with the relevant paperwork and £80 to get the bike taxed. As soon as he called me I was on my way......And so, I've rekindled my love of the stonking Big K, after over 17 years since my last one, a 1980 MkII.
On the 100 mile journey home, first impressions were pretty good, in fact, quite awesome really! Having been riding a Bullet for five years, this is the anti-thesis to the Indian Royal Enfield, in every way...
More stuff to follow as and when. Enjoy.

Reading Services. October 2014.

The 'face' of the Predator.....
Image

Since it's 'incarnation' on the Alien v Predator theme in 2010/2011, it has covered under 500 miles, as verified by the paperwork and previous m.o.t's.
Image

Engine rebuilt by Dick Jones Motorcycles, Cardiff. Invoice for £1330 dated September 2010. Still to be 'run in' effectively. Add to this the £1400 Custom paint job, by Red 'n' Ink, a well known South Wales custom bike shop. Completed circa 2007 I was informed. The previous owner lavished some serious money on this old timer!
Image

Having 'found my feet' again on the short ride from Reading Services to the Oxford Road, I called in to see Mr Zed, 'Grubby', at MTC Motorcycles. He gave it the nod of approval for the price I paid. Thence onto Broad Street, where, having parked outside the Alehouse, me and a friend sat outside and watched all the people stopping to take a good look at my new beast! Young and old just could not stop themselves, some even snapping pics. It certainly caught peoples attention on this busy Saturday afternoon.
Image

Sunset over Maidstone, mid December. This shot turned out really well, one of my favourites so far, emphasising the Lime and Gold paint perfectly.
Image

A lot of time and effort was put into this paintwork, hence, the £1400 bill!

Leave him alone and go play with your plastic pocket rockets

I think the bike is smart - my initial impression were it's rather tacky... but it has grown on me now and it's good to have a bike that stirs things up (hey nw66  ).

You gonna go the the ACE for Kawasaki Day in April :?:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Within my budget old boy! Suffice to say, my rough and ready MkII, that I bought in 1996', cost £1800? After it was stolen in 97', the insurance paid out £1750. Happy ish' days.....
This beast cost me £1500, plus £50 delivery to Reading, and £20 train fare. I think I did well. Since being built up some years back, it has hardly been used, and certainly never seen a wet road until I got 'swamped' on Boxing Day 2014?
It remains to be seen whether that 'face' stays or goes yet. The LED's are pretty naff' actually, not much of a spread of light. I may be wrong, but I'm sure it had a normal headlight fitted to pass the m.o.t just days before I bought it.
And the last ticket before the current one, in May 2011 advises; all lights covered at the time of test DAY LIGHT MOT.
I'm inclined to keep it like this until October 2015 (m.o.t time..!).That will give me a chance to show it around Kent, and probably further afield, to gauge 'reaction'? The feedback will sway me.
Might even have to re-name it Marmite....... :) :!:

I would take the nose fairing off, (it sits too far out and the visible wiring does not look good) and put a round headlight on, and a set of clocks from an A4, A1, A2 or Mk2....I really like the green though

Indeed Mick.
Mate lives in Reading, and not pillion friendly (me neither!). We've both known Grubby at MTC since the early daze, knows his Zed's inside out.
The bike fell away from me just after I arrived home from Reading on that first ride? Centre stand caught a crack in the poxy pavement. Bloody council...
Couple of weeks later, I locked up the front wheel in a 'no win' situation and dropped it again. Left side this time, clutch lever ball end, and, very fortunately, just a minor scrape on the generator cover. It caught me out I'm afraid. Not turned a wheel since 28th December when the clutch cable went pingggg....! Spares on there way I'm told. Other issues have surfaced since then and all are being dealt with as and when I can face handling nuts/bolts that are akin to ice cubes....No centrally heated shed has made progress very slow at this time.....

Replacement clutch lever will be £6 and in polished alloy no less...which means the brake lever needs stripping back to alloy to match.....
Image

Just a very minor scrape. Could of been much worse.....I've not taken this casing off yet, but I do believe it has been 'fettled' in the past, to good good effect in fact.

Clearly whoever 'built' this set out with a vision of how they wanted it to look, Odd then that they spent £1400 on the paintwork, and £14 on the fairing and top yolk..... then got the local junior school kids to fit them.

The fitting of the idiots lights and wiring would have me worried about some of the other 'work' that's been done that we're not seeing.

Lose the fairing, fit a proper headlight and clocks, tone down the green/gold on the calipers and lowers etc and you've got yourself a nice ST.

Cheers Gary,
Everything that's fitted works though and works well. I cant deny it, underneath the seat and tank were a lurking a few little devils, but it's all very original and intact. The real hidden horror was inside the tank, that may cost me. (See another posting here).
When I get to meet someone here, that really knows his Zed nut's from his Zed bolts, I'll be asking them to tell me what else is wrong that I missed in Reading. Now there's an offer not to be refused..... :!: :!:

Cheers Ginger, (my favourite tipple that!), but Wemoto are going to deliver.....soon I hope.......

F.Y.I, Could of had one made to order, by the regular specialist in cables, at Kempton Park Autojumble on Saturday. £22, using quality British materials.
(Better not tell the purist's out here though...) :)
