Another Z650

#1 PostAuthor: Z1parR » Mon Dec 29, 2014 1:18 pm

I thought i'd set about tidying up my Z650 .
Nothing too elaborate , certainly no turbo'd 1100 beast .
Just a bit of a spruce up so that i have a half decent bike to ride .
After a bit of deliberation about just how to go about it and in which direction , i then had a brain fart went and bought another
A trip up to Workington to see my old pal Duane (DDZ900) saw me come back down with No.2 650 .
A few hours with the power washer and a bit of polishing and it didn't look half bad .
All the chrome is rusted and all the aluminium furred but a dead original almost all there thing .
An hour or two of cleaning tank and carbs , new fuel in and battery robbed off my 900 and we got a tune out of it .
It ran fairly well but after some more arsing about balancing carbs and putting new plugs in it ran even better .
I even tried some indicators that i had stashed on it and after 20 mins they worked too .
Rode it in circles round the yard a few times and decided it'll do nicely .
The pics show that it didn't look too foul at all , then i stripped it down .

Oh god no , that sounds desperately painful

It was just my left bollock as it got trapped between my leg and the tank on a right hand bend .
Thanks for your concern :up

Everything came apart fairly well , broke nothing and stripped no threads so that was a result .
Being a Northern Git and therefore careful with my money i decided to do most jobs 'in house' or 'in garden'.
I figured that the well running engine ( well it was pissing oil out from the kickstart shaft seal ) needed soda blasting
to smarten it up a bit .
Knowing absolutely bugger all about soda blasting i did some online research .
I've a small sandblasting gun and two compressors linked , so what could possibly go wrong ?
Bought 25kg of granular bicarb for £20 and gave it a go .

I'll show pics of how it turned out later .
I'm pretty happy with it and it's definately improved it , Steve Smethurst is far from worried about my efforts though .
What a shitty dusty job it is , i knew it was going to be and have an area at the back of my garden where i can do such tasks .
Cue about 10 days rain which totally knackered the plan and put me right off my usual slack schedule .
While the frame was bare it was treated to a good degrease/clean and a new set of taper head bearings .
Swinging arm pivot was cleaned and pumped with grease .

The original forks were pitted , so with me being a bit of a hoarder i had another set which i treated to a good clean and polish .

Having wrestled the frame off the engine and then blasted the engine .
I later thought it would be great fun to wrestle the frame back around the motor .
Fortunately (as those of you that know me will agree) being 13 stone of dashingly handsome muscle this task was easily sorted again by myself .
Still wearing my back support belt now 10 days later :lar
Suddenly things start to take a shape .

Been busy on doing loads of little bits which are the most time consuming .
Bit of polishing here , coat of paint there , all that sort of stuff .
Mudguards though pitted on the chrome have polished up quite well , silver smoothrite will hopefully help the insides , it won't harm them .

Front tyre was a bit short on tread
I decided to remove it and fit another fresher tyre using tyre levers , strength and swear words .
I can't remember the last time that i changed tyres by hand it was that long ago .
I now remember why it has been such a long time .
Job done though :up
And yes i did fit it right way round first time :D

All in all a reasonably productive last four weeks , for me anyway .
As i said earlier it's only a spruce up to give me a decent enough bike to get out on .
I havn't the eye for detail that some have to do a full on resto .
To be honest i can't be arsed either
Fair play to those that can and do though .
Got to tidy the loom up next and tackle a hundred and one other non glamorous jobs .
Would really like to have it ready for a run out on Sunday 11th Jan .
Can't see it happening but i'll give it a go , no ones bleeding if i don't .
At least it's on it's wheels now .

Looking good Geoff.

I have a bag of that Ecostrip, still unopened. Must have been moving it around for the last two years at least.

Any pic's of the 'winter wonderland' scene that I presume it must have left :?

Ha ha Steve re: the winter wonderland scene
It makes a mess alright but i didn't take any pics of it .
I did it on a concrete base left behind when i pulled down an old shed .
There's only cows in the field behind me and they didn't seem to care about the dust .
I attacked it with a power washer and a brush so it looks ok now .
It did look very festive for a bit though .
