So, I wanted one of these since I was 15 in 1983 and an older guy I know bought one brand new. Bought one about 2 years ago but sold it shortly afterwards and regretted it immediately, so when this one came up for sale recently and it checked out as a genuine ELR I bought it with the full intension of stripping and rebuilding.

I've rode the bike for the last couple of weeks to see what does and doesn't work, gearbox is poor on the down shift and difficult to engage neutral from 1st, Duane (DDZ900) reckons there's a fair bit of play in the linkage so hopefully that is all, engine wise it pulls well and revs cleanly but the top end is tappety so a head re build will be on the cards, I'll let my mate Rob Fisher tackle that plus fitting a new timing chain.

I'll check the bores etc when it's apart and make a decision on the rings etc then.

Front forks are pitted and will need redone, new rear shocks, possibly ZRX1200 will be fitted, exhaust will be binned and a Kerker is on the shopping list.

I have a short rear mudguard but would like a full length one, at the right money, what's the repro ones like ?

Bodywork will be getting redone in original colour scheme.

A new seat will be needed or recover the original.

Anyway, after a final ride out last night it was spanner time this morning with an assortment of labels, bags and boxes.

Hoping to get the frame powder coated first , but don't want to lose the frame number under the coating, and start adding bits as they are cleaned, plated or powdered.

I've restored quite a few classic cars to concours over the last 20 years and hope I can turn out my bike to the same standard, time will tell.

Cheers, Paul

And a short while later

Shouldn't need to lose your frame No.

My powdercoater (Nick @ Griffs) masks the No. then finishes it with some clear.

No turning back now .....

Pretty pleased with how it's came apart, no snapped fasteners, yet, a few previous 'repairs' to correct, nothing major but it will need a replacement generator cover ( I think that's what it's called) ...

Image

This may explain the pathetic rear brake ...

All the best, Paul

I can't wait to do this to mine, going to go back to original, just negotiating the price for an original 4-2 exhaust system and rear shocks.

Hard to resist trying a couple of fresh bits back on, need to get cracking with the engine but busy building several Escort RS's for someone at the moment as well.

Temporary fasteners

Not a lot to report, been stripping the engine down for a thorough clean and repaint.

Faults, well the cam bushings/bearings look to have a wee bit of wear so that's to sort when the head gets a full rebuild.

I was shocked that the front sprocket nut was less than finger tight and the tab washer was not tapped over to lock the nut, could have been nasty.

Bores look ok and bike wasn't smoking at all so hoping a quick hone and new rings will suffice.

Open to suggestions as to why the tensioner was jubilee'd ?

I've also booked a slot with Flying Tiger to have the paintwork done.

Tried tailpiece on to figure out how short the mudguard is, I think it will do.

Not yet, will probably be a few weeks time as it's a 3 hour drive each way to drop them off, probably gonna go black on most of them as that's what they should be, I've been told that as the chemical black fades it can give an appearance of very dark green whereas the drab green is very green.

the tensioner part that is jubileed is under pressure from a spring inside isnt it? thread of the cap is probably suspect and if it popped off with the engine running it would have been disastrous.
