Finished top end rebuild on Saturday, it was raining all day so didn't test until today. Went out with half a gallon of fuel in to check for leaks etc, none found so filled up and put on about 100 miles. Bike behaved perfectly. Very pleased. All I need to do is put the twin disc conversion on, maybe wait til winter for that.

Thanks to Hutchy for the paint job. Excellent work.Image

Excellent work Z1Boy! I must find the time to give my engine a bloomin'
good scrub up too

What needed doing to the top end?

Kudos to Hutchy for another perfect paint job :up

It's one of those things that kind of run away with you. I was considering replacing the 4 into 1 exhausts with some proper Z1 exhausts, but then I thought that before spending a grand on exhausts I should give the engine a once over - it had become a bit tired over the years. Did a compression test and they were all over the place so off came the head and Barrels. Took them to Sutton Soda blasting for a clean up while waiting for parts. Pistons and Bores ok, so a de glaze and new rings in there, valves and springs were replaced, and all the chain rollers were replaced and the front slipper guide was broken so that too. The camchain was unworn so that was a relief. All together about £700 went on the engine. I put a manual cam chain tensioner on too so I know it's set properly.

While I was working on the engine, I took the paintwork to Hutchy for a "proper job" instead of the racing green that it was wearing. Building the engine up, I got one of those small petrol bottles that hang on the bars, great for first start up and setting the carbs so it was ready for when Hutchy had finished.

I have to say thanks to Jerry Humpage for sorting me out with shims [3 or 4 times], luckily he lives not far from work so that was handy.

Then I had opportunity to buy a set of new Doremi pipes from a friend, so cash was splashed once more.

Anyway, it's done now and rides really well although running in, it seems a lot smoother, and those pipes sound great.

Hi looks really nice , but why put a twin disc set up on when you have a good pretech caliper that stops you :D is it just for originality ?

Thanks for all your kind words. Would anyone of you knowledgeable experts take a guess at the value for Carole Nash agreed value insurance purposes?

Thanks

Andy

Looks beautiful. I've always liked the Z1a. Don't have a clue about value, these bikes always sell for way more than I think.
