Z1-B rebuild...at last!

#1 PostAuthor: steve452 » Sun Jun 22, 2014 2:33 pm

Having got the bike up to Aylesbury and decanted most of the bits from old top boxes/black bags into little blue boxes (pics to follow later) I've had a look at the condition of the kit and need some work done.

Working on the principle that I don't want an anal original (I've already lost the original pipes so that's a nogo) but a pretty clean and shiny example for riding on the road, can anyone help answer the following;

1) Recommend a good rechroming service within reasonable distance of the Bucks area, particularly if they can rechrome wheels without obscuring the date markings. What sort of price are we looking at for a pair of Z1-B rims? (I've also got other bits such as grab rail etc).

2) Is it cheaper getting fork sliders rechromed (they have minor pitting) rather than buying new (z-power have a set for c£100)?

3) Is there any prep work I can do before handing parts over to reduce the price (eg removing pitting, general cleaning etc).

4) Recommend someone who can repair/rebuild the speedo (bit of a wreck!).

5) The blackwork (frame, swingarm etc) is in reasonable condition with a few minor blemishes where cables etc. have rubbed the paint off. Can I get away with just touching up these areas, and if so what is the best paint to use? I do have an air compressor with a paint gun attachment so should get a reasonable finish.

Any help with any of the above will be very much appreciated. As soon as I've emptied the last of the bits out I'll post some "Before" pics.

Many thanks all.

Hi good luck with the build.

Al Marshall is the man for your clock rebuild top work done a few sets for me over the years.

See my post below

Fork's its a personal choice but it is cheaper to buy a new set from Z Power especially if you become a Z1OC member you get 10% discount.

Steve, I've just paid £150 for hard re-chroming of some pitted forks (albeit they were from a CBX) so the Z Power price does seem a good option.

Cheers

Mikey is the Club's most recommended for polishing and re-chroming (he also does zinc plating and anodising) from what I've seen on the forum.

Yes Mikey has stopped doing chrome work, I asked him a couple of weeks ago. Club directory needs amending to reflect that..
