Z650 REDISCOVERED 24 YEARS LATER

#1 PostAuthor: KWACKERZ1 » Sat Nov 10, 2007 10:18 pm

Decided to start on the old 650 for those who who have not read this on padders dyson thread here's the history,

"I was inspired about a month ago by reading Padders find of the DYSON 250,and looked up my old z650 reg on the DVLA web site as I was curious to find out if it still lived.
It appeared dead and had not been registered or sorn for years.

Then low and behold two weeks ago on ebay a similiar one appeared on ebay, I say similiar because it was listed as having a 717cc kit on which mine had.
A look at the photos revealled the same style dresda swing arm, so I emailed the guy and it turned out to be my old un. So i bought it!

Its still got all the chrome buts I put on it in 1983 with the z1 dual disc front end, the original piper exhaust, and get this

THE SAME FRONT TYRE!
I know this as I had "sadly" painted the lettering in on the Pirrelli and matched it with my original photos.

The Bike was owned by the same guy I sold it to for 20 years and then passed to a local guy who was still registered on the log book. (but he got killed about 3 years ago in a car crash). So somehow it ended up in
stourbridge .

Unfortunately someone has butchered the electrics, removed the alternator, and all indicators, and the clocks so I have some work to do. (If anyone has bits lying around please drop me a line)

Good points are that all the basic bits are there and the engine runs and still has excellent compression.
Now all I need to do is save some money for the restoration and gather the bits required."

The bike looked like this 25 years ago!

The red was how it was when I sold it the flame job how i bought it.
It looks like this now.

I Still have no money but have started the strip down.
Checked the engine compression 120 on all cylinders so I think I will leave that until I get the chassis sorted.

The engine is now in my parts cleaner and actually looks better already!
The next thing is to get the frame stripped!
Bits I already need to source are:
Complete wiring loom,
Decent headlight bowl
Clockset.
Rear mudgaurd,
Chrome front mudgaurd.
I also intend to get the chrome bits redone so need to find somewhere decent to strip and rechrome.
So thats it for now but at least its started.

Fantastic, I love the 650's, mind you it can be harder to find good 650 parts than for the bigger bikes.
Please keep us updated with these builds.

Hey Bedlow mate of mine owned LLG361P back in the early 80s. A brown Z1B with nickel plated frame and 1105 top end. Offered it me for a grand back in '84, but I turned it down as it had been hammered and thrown down the road at 80mph

Yours may have been one from the same batch ??

Bedlow, have you checked on the DVLA site to see if they're still alive ??

L(LG) would have been a Cheshire registration, wonder which dealer supplied them from new ??

yep have looked into that on the DVLA search site
it seems as if it was around until 1996 (10 years after I sold it)
but has not been taxed since then,
so i guess its sorn, or exported, or scrapped
or prehaps even laying unloved
in an old barn rusting away
sob,sob ive got to go now to upset to continue

if its not been done lets start up
oldridesreunited.co.uk it could prove popular!!!!

The DVLA web site can dash your hopes my 650 had not been taxed or sorn for years, when I looked it up at the web site a few weeks before it popped up on ebay.
I think there are a lot out there just sitting in storage that people cannot be ars'd to sorn.

Which reminds me I probably should sorn my spare frame logbook!

Plus nobody who is sane scraps a 9 or an thou! they are to gorgeous!

There is a date (year 2000??) before which vehicles don't have to be declared SORN if they were already off the road at the time.
So Bedlow your bikes might still be waiting for you, somewhere
Not sure about this website though
www.onenightstandsrevisted.co.uk
Never been out with an ugly bird, but I've woken up with a few

Although I have not posted any pics, lately the 650 is slowly, coming on, its completely stripped now and awaiting shipping to the powder coaters.
Although I have had a devil of job finding a local based firm who does both th powder and the blasting as the one I used previously now has a rep for losing bits. I cant afford that.
I have also aquired another project of a full blown daddy zed so have decided to do the 650 on a budget.

I have aquired a spare engine though which is really clean and tidy and complete but I only need the alternator and starter, which is a shame as it would bolt in and save me a lot of cleaning of the 717 engine.
But 717 it is so I need to keep cleaning and polishing.

I have cleaned up all the wheels and they have come up pretty good so although progress is slow it is coming on.
Will post some pics after crimbo!!!
