Ltd refresh

#1 PostAuthor: Redbeard » Sun Dec 15, 2013 3:30 pm

Not sure this is project material, more of a going over of a taxed and mot'd bike. Admin can move it if necessary. I got this z1000ltd a couple of months ago off the auction site, as I say with mot, and a healthy stack of service history, receipts and every mot as far back as 1995 when it was imported.

Image

Plans were to make sure it was roadworthy, do away with the high bars and maybe get the seat re-shaped. How bad could an mot'd bike be? Well rear tyre was worn out, as was the chain. Rear pads were down to the metal, exhaust gaskets had gone AWOL, front caliper leaks, fork bottoms off another zed had been used as handle bar clamps, swingarm was rotted out...otherwise ok

Found a nice Dresda swingarm which fitted straight on. I got a good deal on a pair of part worn rear tyres (thanks Jack) so for now am keeping the 16" wheel. The rear shocks were past it so splashed out on some Progressive ones which actually move. Also got a 530 chain kit with Talon sprocket.

Image

Fitted some lower bars today, just need cables and a shorter top brake line.

Image

Tank was full of gummed up fuel which was coming out in big chunks so that'll be flushed out and sealed at some point.

Also done lot's of small jobs, oil and filter, plugs, exhaust gaskets, bar clamps and bolts, made a better exhaust bracket so it hangs more naturally and not forced upwards as it was. Rear pads, larger rear indicators (yet to do front ones), fixed the seized helmet lock, air filter..

Image

Got rid of the rear mudguard and made a bracket up for the plate/light but not sure yet, might go back to the mudguard. I'd like to fit a z1 tail unit so it might stay for now. Seat is going to be re-shaped so it is less stepped and re- covered.

I hope to get it painted as well over Winter all being well, so fingers crossed it'll be done ready for Ace Café Kawasaki day 2014.

That's looking better already, losing the rear muddy makes a big difference. I'd like to see what it's like with a Zed tail piece on it.

Thanks GB. I'm not sure it will work due to the lowered seat rails. I only have a mk2 unit to try on for size which is nowhere near fitting. Could do with a z1 tail just to try out. The seat would definitely have to be reshaped at the back to allow for tail unit, the Ltd one is flat. If anyone has a tatty one knocking about they'd like to get rid of, let me know. The earlier ltd had one, not sure of the frame differences if any?

Made lots of progress over the last couple of weekends. I got my chain on now after shortening it with my new tool that arrived today (thanks for the help Charlie), it was a doddle to fit even for me. I made a chain guard with some angle bar from B&Q. I had to change to higher handlebars because of a master cylinder/fork top clearance issue. I went with some chrome ones I kept back from the z750. Large round indicators are fitted at the front now and new shorter Venhill upper brake line and fittings. Shorter J clutch cable fitted. I took my forks off for my local mechanic to do the seals on and he kindly fitted some spacers to stiffen them up a bit as well. I put the original rear mudguard back on until I decide what I'm doing with the seat. I made a start on the fuel tank too, emptying it of hardened fuel. There is a pile of the stuff on the garage floor now, probably increased the capacity of the tank somewhat. Fuel tap has been cleaned and has new seals now too. Going to seal the tank properly when Frosts get the kit back in stock. All I need to do after that is come up with a paint scheme and get my mate to paint it. Tomorrow I will take some up to date photos.

I can lend a tailpiece for you to check for fitting, don't want to sell it though

Thanks Mark, I could come over and pick it up at a convenient time. Not in any rush.

Hi Mark, I am going to hold fire with the z1 tail, I have found an old project on kzrider where someone fitted a gpz11/j tail section to a CSR. Thanks for the kind offer though. If I go down the route of bodywork change it'll be in the distant future.

Today I bled the front brake and took a couple of pics..

I lifted the rear of the tank an inch or so, takes away from the chopper look slightly. I will reshape the front of the seat and stick with it for now..

It has a kinda Bobber look to it now.

If I may say this at the risk of pissing you off....

I think flat bars would transform it even further??

 No I'm not. I agree but it's finding a set wide enough to avoid the brake master cylinder clearing the top of the forks. I like what this geezer did to his CSR (same frame). One day if funds allow I might try something similar.

The tank was full of old fuel as you can see in the pic below; this was only half of it! I sealed the tank with Por15 last weekend, no before pics but i can put up an after pic when i get one of the inside.
I won a fairing on ebay for a gs550e, took a gamble but it fits almost perfect as it is. It's just hanging in place for the pic so isn't dead straight yet.
I have an annoying brake fluid leak, either from the master cylinder or due to the new brake line, not sure yet.
Not sure whether to bother with paint yet or do some shake-down runs first. Haven't decided on a final scheme yet anyway.
