Thanks to all who commented on my new boy post, I've done some more to the J since then. We've just had a georgous sunny day and I chucked the bikes out of the garage to have a good sweep and thought wow! the're looking good, nearly there.... I took the J off the road for six months, eight years ago having run it into the ground. I've owned it since 1985 and later used it to commute through two winters at which point I realised I had to fix it or scrap ii.



I had hoped to fire it up this weekend but am still waiting on a couple of Evil Bay purchases.

If she runs, a chain and sproket kit is next on the buy list followed by finishing the brakes, I'm sure I got all that in the right order

Couple of proper old dinosaurs, that six looks like a real handful.

Do you know where the rearset footrests on the J came from or who made them?
I have just fitted the same to my J and have no details about their origins.
They were anodised gold when i got them but ten minutes in the shotblaster sorted that right out.

Hi, I can't remember what make the rearsets are, they came from an ad in a mag back in the 80's, I've never seen another set, they were originally duel peg with the master cylinder behind.[img][img]http://i1358.photobucket.com/albums/q769/bbrocq/011_zps1445f93f.jpg[/img]

I had already repaired the pegs by fitting apair of bar ends, but having bought the Racefit at Stafford, I had to refabricate the back plate and pedal to fit a ZXR master cylinder I bought on Evil bay.[/img]

I got an immaculate Marshall race pipe like that..... it's only been fitted to a bike, but never ran-up - saving it as a possible for me Harris

I'm hoping the Marshal endurance is the second best pipe I ever owned (after the race fit), on the J, I had the pre regulation straight through baffle but it was just to far gone to reuse, the one on the CBX is the later version (although a very large drill bit accidentally passed though when I wasn't looking) but when I hill climb it I'll swap the can over, loud as and so cooool!

The hack saw was looking dejected so i removed the parts of the plates which carry the rear footrest as they wont be needed. Now powder coated black as well.

Did you do that repair because the footrest mount bolts were 'frozen' into the footpeg??

The repair was to remove a bad case of tarmac rash due to a Pleb of the first order throwing himself at slow speed up the road with mud on his tyres about fifteen years ago I machined off the ends a fitted a pair of anodised bar end weights which fortunately just happened to be the same size.

Next job is to sort out a chain and sprockets. I want to go down from a 630 and Pigford kindly pointed out going to 530 was the way to go but can anyone suggest gearing and number of links, the J ran 41/15 on 630 but I have no idea what to order. I presume I can order for a GPZ 1100 unitrac as I'm using a unitrac swingarm but I'm running the 750 18" wheel. Any guidance would be gratefully received. Also what type of lock washer/tad retains the front sprocket on a GPZ motor? as this is missing.

There is a conversion calculator on here from Steve Debben ('debben1' i think) to take existing 630 sizes to 530 sizes. Dont end up with 15 45 90 if you see what i mean.

If its a unitrak output shaft it will have a large flat nut with inbuilt spreader washer. The locking mechanism for this is a large flat tab washer with splined internal.

The spline pattern is the same for the J output shaft just a different locking mechanism.
If you have access to a welder; get the tab washer blobbed onto the sprocket.

How many links are in the existing chain if there is one?
Using a different wheel but of the same rolling radius will make no difference to the gearing.

If in doubt order a chain a few links over and cut them off when you get the wheel set in the correct position.

Have just changed the J from 630 to 530.
It was 15 42 98 in 630 size
is now 17 47 114 in 530 size
That is not a direct conversion because of limitations with supply of sizes and the fact that i already had a 530 17 tooth front i wanted to use.

15 in 630 converts to 18 in 530 i think.
42 tooth rear in 630 becomes a 50.4 in 530.
and 98 links of 630 becomes 118 in 530 if what i wote is correct.
In any event my 17 47 114 could really be about 18 47 or 17 44 because its currently under-geared and though it picks up well it runs out of puff at about 115 - 120 mph.

Overall reduction ratio as standard for 15 / 47 is 2.733 The 17 47 gears i am using gives 2.764

Front sprocket was an off set one i had and the rear came direct from Talon in Somerset.
They also do offset sprockets periodically.
Debbens may have some in stock.
Debbens as well as others have chain by the length off a roll.
