GB's 'Period' modded Z1000A2 with 'Toast Racks'

Ok, I've been sitting on this for about six months. I bought it last year during the 'unseasonably' hot weather we had at the end (I think) of September.

It is a UK registered bike with just two....... Yes TWO previous owners.

The bike cost me £1200 (ebay) & a trip up to North Yorkshire, although I did make the effort & go and see me Mum whilst I was up there.

Plan is to 'return' it to an example of what lots of us might have done 'back in the day'.

It's already got finned cases, two-four seat, shorty front mudguard, aluminium engine mounts, some frame bracing, etc, etc.

I plan to powdercoat the frame 'graphite' grey. (Like all my other bikes).

After speaking to Hutchy, hopefully I'll get some sort of 'metalflake' paintjob...... This month's colour is red, but that could all change.

Wheels are destined to be 'pearlesent' white, with polished rims.

I have an Alfa 4-1 (more about that later)

Best of all is the 'Toast Racks' that Guyzed kindly sold to me....... They should finish it off nicely!

What pipe are you thinking of making/getting or are going to leave the ones you ready have.

Now that looks ok, and the finned covers look like quality items......but toast racks..hmmmmm I didn't think they looked "right" in the 70's and 80's and I will remain open minded!

It will look so much better with the Grey frame tho

that engine looks like an over grown George Foreman with all those finned covers and putting toast racks on it will make it look even more like a left over from a Wimpy Bar

At least it'll be a George Foreman that gets used....... I know we've got one somewhere..

I really don't do the toast racks or metal flake, but good luck with the project, will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Mmmmm. It seems that opinions are divided on this. I thought they might be.

Managed to spend a little time in the garage this afternoon & decided I ought to try & get the thing running before I pull it apart.

Bike came with two sets of carbs, I think these are the originals 26mm, dual fuel inlets, tickover adjuster on top, but fuel mixture screws underneath & no airscrews on the side. can anyone confirm if these are correct for an A2?



The bike was taken off the road when it developed a missfire, looking at the insides of these carbs I can see why.

I have refurbed a few sets of carbs in the past, but never seen any as gummed up as this.





Carbs have now been stripped & are being ultrasonically cleaned as I type this. I have also ordered some Keyster carb kits from NRP which include the needle jets.

Hopefully I'll have the carbs all back together by the end of the week & we'll see if it'll fire up.

They look different, do they only have one fuel pipe connection - that's all I can see in the photo?

How are matey, will we see you out on that bike soon?

Yes just one fuel Tee , they are VM26SS off my A1 engine
They do look a bit different to Bears carbs though .
I hope to be using the thing soon PJ , its in quite a few bits again at the moment but a few less each day

Ok, been a little busy.

Carbs have been stripped & cleaned, I opted to soak the brass parts in cheap cola (17p ) overnight, then finished 'em off in the ultrasonic bath with a bit of vinegar.





Carbs are re-assembled, with the Keyster kits, which appear to be excellent quality. I had some newly plated parts left over from another set I was refurbing, but couldn't finish because of a damaged body, so I have used some of them on these carbs.





Spot the mistake.

I re-fitted the carbs & connected up a temporary fuel supply, there is a small leak from one of the 'T' pieces, but hopefully the ethanol in the fuel will be a bonus for once & swell the rubber overnight.

Temptation got the better of me though & I thought I'd 'give it a little try':roll:

After about a dozen kicks, I had to stop to take me sweatshirt off Then another couple of prods saw a 'brief flurry of life' accompanied by a shit load of old soot, fired all over my newly painted floor from those slash cut pipes.

Well that was the 'end of play' for today...............................





......................................... Tomorrow I'll wheel the fecker outside & try again.
