Zed Six Nifty

#1 PostAuthor: pertonpc » Mon Feb 20, 2012 9:00 pm

Hi People
I've won the task of tidying up the Green Lantern's 1978 Candy Emerald Green ride for the 2012 season. Think he's hoping to be an outrider for the Golden State Carriage in the June Diamond Jubilee celebrations or something.

Anyhow I've been consulting with my Zedi Masters and our first plan was to customise it as the EDDIE LOWSLUNG RICE REPLICA

But the Green & White one insisted it should be "back to factory" so we have had to settle for turning it from a Zed Six Fifty, into the ZED SIX NIFTY

Currently been rebuilding the seat unit with new foam

Image

and tidying up the wiring harness

I've stuck a few things on a rebuild website if anyone wants to have a look. Sure I've got a few things wrong or missing but perhaps someone on here will advise me
Cheers from Mark

Ok then
What a difference a week makes - snow has gone and new carb hoses have been sorted.
Gave the carbs a strip and clean this winter -

Image

...and they got rebuilt onto the bike a couple of days ago ready to try and get her going again. Here's a pic for Guy Martin showing my posh new float bowl screws and where those carb limiter caps I was teasing him about should go

Image

I have put loads of detailed photos and stuff on me website if anyone wants to have a look at carb & airbox fitting. Click here or hold your mouse over Z650 B to see the sub pages.
http://www.zedrider.co.uk/carbs--airbox.html
Oh and I put those clicker things at the bottom of the long pages so you can get straight back to the top easy.

Image

There's something else going on here - but you will have to wait for next week to see this lot unless you want to click here
http://www.zedrider.co.uk/exhaust-system.html
Apologies if there's bad spellings on the web site but I've got a stack done on the bike this weekend and I want to try and get her running today.
Wish me luck :!:
Cheers from Mark

Ok then this is it - after 5 months of fettling -

All electrics checked and ok.

Battery fully charged last night.

Got her all hooked up to a supply of fresh petrol and blanked off the vacuum pipe to the fuel tap.

Carb overflow pipes routed outside the bike over a bowl just in case  .

Choke to full, throttle closed, eyes closed and everything crossed....

Hit the starter and she went off first time. I'm just loving this ZED SIX NIFTY

Little bit of smoke from the engine work over the winter soon disappeared and she ended up settling down to a reasonably smooth idle at 1400 rpm or so which is ok for a start point.

Next job is vacuum gauges and mixture checking with Colortune plug to see if we can smooth things out a bit more. Looks like it's going to be worth cancelling the SORN now.

Just waiting for my new brake hoses and correct early speedo cable bracket then the front brake and fender can get sorted. HAPPY DAYS

Cheers from Mark

Ok then
It probably wasn't that hard to guess was it? Here's my brand new Z650 complete exhaust system - after three years of searching.

Image

Made up from re-chromed headers, adapted by MOTAD, new pattern silencers, re-plated split keepers and link pipe clamps with NOS link pipe, outer header clamps and heat shields.

Did I mention I got the bike going again yesterday? Oh yeah I did so anyway the Green Lantern (who had commisioned the whole project if you remember) got so excited to see her going again that he was jumping around the workshop like Tigger. He kept interfering with me trying to balance the carbs and set the mixtures by using his special green strobe lamp on the points plate and dazzling me

What's he like eh??

See what I mean - that ain't no snap on strobe is it?

Image

Anyhow mixtures sorted and idle is back where it should be now the carbs are balanced so the Green One will soon be hitting the road again.

Oh and if anyone is still keeping up with this malarkey here's a little reward here for your trouble -

Great article on setting up carbs on the link to the Zedrider website. Very comprehensive and easy to follow, although likely to be quite time consuming!

Cheers Stevie,

I haven't done all the things in the articles on my bikes so it's good to get some feedback.

Could somebody like Crofty who has done 650 starter clutch repairs just confirm that the article on that is ok as well please.

Don't want to mislead anyone.

Thanks from Mark

Hi Paul

Not sure about the Big Breakfast. Never quite sure how welcome site members are on the organised club runs.

If not will deffo be seeing you at the usual meets - Bradford Arms, Swancote, Quatt Cafe, Mill Meece, Four Ashes etc. so you can pop along and check on my progress (or lack of) since you set the bike up for me on Paul's drive all those years ago

i have been doing some research on this timing ring and it seems to me that unlike your picture of the green lantern, it is in fact an anal ring to light up the floor as you walk. ie - meaning it is safe and you have the green light to proceed, although in one way you are right about the timing as with it fitted anally walking with it fitted is all about timing .. hope this helps. Also it is a bit like my FB profile of Captain Scarlet - spectrum is green.
ps , also i realy think it time that perton pc came out as who he realy is ..sheldon

Hi Guys,

Got a bit more done on the bike this week. Click on here for exciting Kick Starter restoration tips

http://www.zedrider.co.uk/z-650-b.html

and here's the little video clip before the body panels, seat and Kick Start went back on.

http://youtu.be/HLIN9kcWoWw

Got some progress on that elusive PCV crank hose at last - I hope - just got to check the new one fits ok.

Thanks a lot Guy,

Panels are actually back on now but I got a bit stuck getting the vid off the camera!! so I got behind on the thread.

Don't think I'm ever gonna get it blinging like yours but it's been fun trying - and you've certainly set the gold standard with the 650 resurrection.

Did you notice the Z900 A4 and Z650 road test brochures are now avail for download as pdf files on my rebuild website??

Fingers crossed my new PCV hose is right - it looks good next to the old one and the parts label is right - but I have had a few let downs with old stock items - so I'll believe it when I see it works.

Cheers from Mark
