Weaver's ELR

#1 PostAuthor: weaver » Wed Jan 25, 2012 9:17 pm

After a 400 mile round trip got the bike home..The bike was exactly as described by Flybo. He threw in some extra bits as well which was great, top man :)

My plan is to give the bike a quick check over and then take it out a couple of times to get a feel for it.Looking at it is going to need a complete strip for cosmetic improvements, the motor has apparently had a new cam chain recently and the shims set up,I must say it sounds sweet.

The motor will be compression tested and checked over,it will need some new gaskets and repainting at least.

My plan is to build a good usable bike to a highish standard, not a show bike or a concourse nut and bolt original machine

There is not a huge budget and there is no deadline as far as time is concerned.I have a bit of work to do to sort out my workshop space before work can properly commence.

I must say I'm pretty chuffed at finally getting one of these after a 20 odd year wait

Had a busy day laying flags for a new shed to put the push bikes and garden stuff in to free up the workshop.Gave the bike a going over, set the tyre pressures, adjusted the chain..see pic for what were masquerading as axle pinch bolts, now replaced with the correct 10mm cap heads. The chain has been fitted with a split link rather than a rivet link which is a no no for me so this will get replaced with a decent gold o ring at some point.
Checked the wheel bearings for play, they seem fine. The previous owner to Brian said he thought the bottom yoke was twisted and it is so I will be on the look out for a zrx11 bottom yoke or zrx11 or 12 yokes complete as a set, apparently the offset is different between the 1100 and 1200.
Took the bike out and it goes fine, gearbox and clutch seem ok,handling seems ok altho it was windy and pissing down so I was taking it easy.
The downside is the motor is quite smokey, got it home and took out the 2 outside plugs, they are black as are the piston crowns.

The previous owner to Brian said he believed a big bore kit had been fitted at some point, waiting to hear back from him if he knows any more details.

My plan is now to sort the motor out first, can the head and barrels be removed with the motor in the frame?Genuine workshop manual is on its way

I have ordered some bits, full gasket set, seat cover,zxr750 rear wheel to allow fitment of 180 tyre to the zrx swingarm.I have also enquired about a fork refurb as well.

I have never worked on kwak motors,so I will be picking brains on here

Included some pics to try to display bikes true condition
