Z1 - ex sprint bike

#1 PostAuthor: chrisu » Sun Nov 13, 2011 11:53 am

i bought this a while ago from a local guy who was into sprinting (some of you may recognise the bike). It ran well and it's reasonably quick compared to a standard bike

First photo was as I bought it.
Straight bars
horrible seat
no airbox
old black harris
NO electrics other than a battery and a dyna ignition unit
no switches.

Well I've been taking my time with it and first steps were to get it into a more roadworthy condition. It is NEVER going to be a standard bike - way beyond my capability/attention to detail but a good usable example.

I could have put on modern switchgear but a great club member sold me a set of date correct Z1 switches at a reasonable price.
Other members provided other bits (exhaust etc)
Z power has had quite a bit of custom - seat, wiring, headlight, indicators etc etc.

Other spares were sourced from the USA and ebay.

The biggest challenge was putting all the electrics back - starter gear, starter motor, gears, rotor, stator, solenoid, regulator/rectifier, wiring, lights, indicators, earth wires (don't forget them !), horn etc.

Well it now all works and I'm pretty pleased. Starts on the button first time every time and is charging correctly.

some - the guy who owned it is local and he personally imported it into the UK in August 1991.

Originally from St Louis Missouri

It's only ever been on the track in the UK. If you check the number on the tail it'll take you to details of Erics sprinting with this and his GPz.

If you want more about its life in the UK pm me............

Hey Chris,
That picture of your left hand switch block......when you slide the headlight knob right down, does it cover the left pointing indicator arrow?
I've recently bought a switch like this and wondering if it's meant to do this (Mine does but it doesn't seem right somehow)
Thanks

i did 'ordeal by DVLA' last week and all the paperwork was ok.

They did say it would have to be inspected...... :(

BUT

today I got all the paperwork back together with a number plate authorisation certificate :D

Off to get a number plate made up - very happy !
