z650 / GPz750 Rebuild

#1 PostAuthor: v70z650 » Sat Feb 20, 2010 5:15 pm

OK - I thought that I should start a project page for the rebuild of my z650 / GPz750. So here are a few early stage project photos to start off with.

Firstly, here is the bike before being stripped down:

Here is the frame with the pillion foot rest hangers and centre stand removed, along with all of the extra brackets that were added in the last build for master cylinder, oil cooler etc:

...and here is the debris:

I am converting the front end back to standard forks - I never linked the GPz forks that I had fitted previously - they were always a bit of a bodge job due to the longer headstock on the GPz and lack of risers:

But as a result I needed to find a way of fitting the GPz wheel in the standard forks. It turned out (after a lot of internet trawling) that a spindle from a 1000J would do the job (being smalled dia than the original z650 item but having similar end caps). Thanks Jack (londoncalling) for the new spindle:

And just for the record, here is the GPz engine fully extracated and awaiting rebuild (but not until the rolling chassis is done):

...and all of the other bits boxed up for safe keeping:

Next step is to get the GPz monoshock swing arm converted to twin shock fitting and into the frame. More photos will follow. Watch this space...

Im planning on a normally aspirated bigbore motor - maybe with the Wiseco 810cc kit with Mikuni smoothbores. Definately not planning on going down the turbo route.
