hey Aztec, nice bike but if i were you i would removed that -------- and replace it with an original --------

Still a 'fun game' Mick, except, you could apply this to most of the bike from some of the fly-on-the-wall comments I've heard recently---
As has been mentioned, it provokes a (welcome) reaction :?:

Seat Hinge Fix

#48 PostAuthor: Aztec Warrior » Mon Apr 06, 2015 6:33 am

This job was completed a few weeks ago and is working fine. Not too pretty, but who can see under here!

Original frame-hinge fixings were missing, probably hacked off in a previous life. All lined up ok and locks down firmly too with no movement.

Some ongoing ST Works.

The sun was shining all day, as opposed to the precipitation today? I have to work outside as the bike will not fit into my custom built shed, so, days like this are made for fettling. A few jobs done.

Had a hellish time in the rain on Friday. Only 10 minutes to work, soon went onto 2 cyl's after about 5 minutes, then onto 1 for the last 200m to the works gate where I let it die, and, sheepishly, pushed it past all the smokers to the bike park. This problem is very common looking at all sorts of posts in www land, there aren't many mc's not affected at some point, including the newer stuff. After several more downpours Friday, by the time I left work at 9pm, the sun had been shining for a while, and the motor was back to normal going home.
The latest fix: for starters, I've turned around the coils, routed the HT leads up and over the frame tubes and resealed the newish NGK caps with heat shrink and smothered all exposed areas in petroleum jelly, which will do the same job as silicone jelly I'm told. Every part had damp in it I noted.Time will tell on this 'fix'. That was dangerous on Friday.
I wonder too if I should make a cover for the air filter pods, but it seemed like purely an ignition problem.

The redundant ballast resistor, by-passed with a fused link by another owner when he fitted aftermarket combined coils/HT Leads. No effect on running that I've noted. As a check, re; Wired George, I measured 12.79v at my battery and 12.75v at both feed wires to the coils. No voltage drop problems here. Slightly rich running may mean a main jet change, currently on 122.5. The slight roughness is really on tickover, maybe, slightly out of balance, as, at all other rev's, right to the top end, there is not a hint of hesitation. Saying this, the last thing I noted today, when I checked all four air screws, they had all loosened out considerably, about 2.5/3 turns each compared to the 1 1/8 I'd set them at a few months back. All springs and seals are there. Will try a smear of threadlock to cure this.
Also noted, fuel was clean, and, even after shaking the take a little, fuel was still running clean. In-line filter was also clean. My tank insides are still in the state as pictured elsewhere here, so was surprised there was no crap to note.
The igniter box is bolted beneath the battery box on this one, reg/rec is behind the right side metal panel. Both appear original and sound. All connections good.
The fixing for the spare kick-start lever can be seen here, on the right, rear frame downtube, and long gone in my case!
The stainless braided breather hose is untidy and oversize and I've ditched this for some rubber tubing. The space here, with no factory air box, is humongous!
The lower part of the inner fender can be seen here, recently bought from D&K. The original was 'butchered' by cutting in half by the previous incumbent, which makes for a lot of mess in the UK weather!

The redundant butchered fender actually worked elsewhere. With some trimming down with a disc cutter it fitted perfectly in the rear section, which was missing on this bike. It doesn't look too out of place either and I think it looks better than the large standard offering, and might just help keep the mess out from under the seat. It's quite amazing the amount of dirt and mess that is picked up under the seat area, and that is only in five or ten minutes in the wet!

Another problem to sort, not looked at yet though.
This part, the brake lever shaft, or maybe the alloy housing, with excessive play, was an advisory on last years m.o.t, so will need fixing, one way or another.

And that 'face', love or loathe it, and the object of much ridicule here and elsewhere, will be meeting it's Nemesis very soon.....But I must admit, something that looks more akin to a 'proper' Zed is what this ST is crying out for. Ongoing...

I should be riding more than fettling at this time, but sod's law dictates that long, bright, warm and mostly sunny days, are an ideal opportunity to get much fettling done outside.
I work two shifts, 'earlies' one week, 'lates' the next, and can usually fit in much stuff before or after the shift. Sat/Suns are free too, and with very little social life since going tee-total in 2013, I seem to spend even more time messing about outside than ever...
A few bits added these past few weeks and a small but significant transformation has been quite successful I think..

A replacement fender/mudguard in chrome, from local member Kev (cheers) which replaces the fibre glass, non standard unit. This part is much more rigid than fibre glass with some bracing in the centre fixing area. A shame to lose part of the original paintset, but, then again, the chrome on this is near perfect and this look is much more traditional and works well.

Clockset and warning lights do the job nicely. A little clean up and de-bugging 36 years of nature, couple of bulbs and rubbers, and a proper tidy up of all the front end wiring, and it all works well, including the fuel gauge, my first ever on a bike! Well pleased with this purchase. Speedo needle is rock solid, compared to the constantly flickering Bullet?

Image

After some commuting this week, and further rich running problems, I think I've I found the reason why the ballast resistor has been by-passed! It did work when I reconnected it recently, but was causing a weak spark and eventually, the plugs were getting fouled. After 50 miles or so I put the 30amp fuse back in position, and hey presto, full power again! Further riding this week still has the bike running rich. The main jets will be sorted next up.

Do the last four digits of my engine no. reveal anything I wonder?

Original headlight now fitted. Thanks to a member here for this part. I had my doubts this would work but it did, and very well too. A little 'refresh' with some some screws/bolts, rubbers and wire wool ect and it works a treat.
Overall, the ST is looking much more 'proper' now.

Had to re-work the headlight brackets I had fitted. Having paid good money for some nos 'ears' and what I thought were the fixing rings/rubbers, I only received 2 rings/rubbers though, so could not fix them up.
And if you can tell me how to get the rubber into the ring and onto the stanchion/ear, I'd be very grateful. I tried every which way with no success? This will do for now until I can be asked to stump up more dosh for another pair of rings/rubbers for the other leg.

Cheers Mick.
Shall hopefully get out again and duly get some 'makeover' pictures up.
(Spent all this weekend fettling the Bullet, which is now ready for it's first start-up for nearly a year. I'll get the video out?.).
