Looks like you pulled it apart just in time.
Why is there always a piece of orange gasket sealant on the oil pickup even when there's no evidence of it being used on any of the joints

Rob, plenty of evidence of the orange goo....... All over the clutch cover, red stuff too!

I am amazed the cams are in such good nick, after seeing the state of that gauze.

OK, some progress.......

Split the cases last week, degreased them, then jet washed them.

Spent a while bead blasting them, to what I thought was a reasonable standard....................

......................... After looking at Bongo's vapour blasted cases at the weekend, I realised, I'd never be happy with the finish I'd achieved, but didn't want to spend a chunk of dosh (I'm trying to keep this project as low budget as poss)
So they were back in the blast cabinet, with some 120 grit Aluminium oxide, that really did knock off all the shit, then I emptied all that out & put the glass beads back in & went over the cases again. Gotta say, I'm quite happy with them now. :D

One benefit for me, over vapour blasting is that I only do the outsides, I know vapour blasting isn't meant to remove any material & is supposed to be fine on bearing/mating surfaces, but after cleaning these up with some fine wire wool, you can still see the original machining marks. :lon

Image

Spent most of today, washing the cases & oilways, used a little rag on a wire, as per Rob (Zed1015)..... Thanks, Rob. Re-Tapped all the threads too.

Steadied cases & fitted a replacement crank, as the original has a suspect taper. Got to say thankyou to young Mr Coldsummer for helping me out with a lot of replacement engine parts.

That's enough for tonight!

I have finally got My Sods Blast set up going and blasted a cyclinder head for a Fellow Club Member and it turned out fine
I am currently building a room just for this purpose
so with a machine shop and blasting set up I can do nearly everything in house

Before joining the two cases, I gave the end of the kickstart shaft a little clean in the bead blast cabinet. Double wrapped it first in a couple of poly bags, save's taking it all apart.
I've seen plenty of gleaming bike's with freshly re-chromed kickstarts, let down by a shitty looking shaft.:?? (Jimmock.... No need to make any 'shaft' observations. )

After coating the mating faces with Kawabond, I've bolted 'em all together with some freshly re-zinced fasteners from Mikey.

Hopefully I'll get the barrels on & get it in the frame over the weekend. :lon :lon
