Not done much to this in the last couple of months, but a bit of 'retail therapy' has brought with it some much needed motivation. (I just hate the dirty shitty taking it all to bits part).

I unpacked this piece of 'bling' last Monday.

Image

It's for a GS1000, which I think helped keep the price down. Sizewise it's narrower at the front pivot & wider at the rear spindle, than the original Kawasaki arm, so should only need a couple of spacers turning to make it all fit.

My new found motivation saw me spend an afternoon in the garage, stripping most of the parts off & sorting them into various boxes, chroming, zinc plating, powder coating etc.

Image

Just the motor to take out, then the whole dirty shitty frame can go off, along with all the other bits & come back all clean & blingy. :sou :sou

There's still lot's left behind for me to refurbish, more of that in me next instalment!

you've probably already noticed this mate but the shock mounts are bushed for the suzuki swingarm to suit a forked lower shock fitting same as on a H**** twinshock

Jon, I had a 'cunning plan'. I was gonna use these, if I can tidy 'em to a reasonable standard;

Image

Just measured 'em & they are 330mm from eye to eye. I think standard is 350mm, If anyone can confirm this, I'd be grateful.

JMC is a 'thicker' arm than standard & in effect raises the shockmounts.

On the standard arm the centre of the shockmount eye is around 20mm above a centre line between the two spindles. On the JMC it's about 60mm + depending which way I use the eccentric adjusters I can also alter the ride height a little.

It's all in bit's now! :D

Frame & a few other parts will be off to Griff's tomorrow for powdercoating.
I'll also be visiting Mikey, with a couple of boxes of parts for chrome & zinc plating, along with a bit of polishing & anodising.

Couple of pic's here;

Frame 'over' engine the 'easy' way. (Keith you'll know what I mean)

'Tonka' Billet engine mounts. Will look so much better once Mikey's done his thing. :D

Likin' this :up (finned covers  do it)

The 'Tonka' mounts - with the JMC arm in are you using a wider rear wheel?
Just thinkin' of the chain run if you use an offset sprocket with those mounts, seem to recall Piggy posting something pre meltdown about some billet mounts and the lower engine mount bolt?

Using standard wheels & tyres. Billet mount had been nibbled at by the chain, just like Piggy's. I've since taken the saw to it & cut away some proper clearance. This also mean's I can no longer bolt all the way through it, so I added a thread insert, so I can just bolt 'into it' from the frame.
Sorry, no pics as it's all with Mikey having the 'magic' treatment. :sou

OK..... I've been a lazy boy.

Not touched this for a while. Frame came back from powdercoating along with the usual brackets etc. Chrome & zinc plating along with a bit of polishing has all come back from Mikey & it's just sat in the shed, still wrapped up for the last couple of months.

Anyhow, today I pulled my finger out. :D I need to strip the engine & blast & rebuild the crankcases before I can go any further. As tempting as it is to start bolting nice shiney parts to the frame, I'm a 'frame over' type of guy. So the crankcases will be the first part I fit to the frame.

I pulled the cam cover off & removed the cams, which after pissing about with Unitrak heads was in remarkably good order. cams were in excellent condition. as were all the cam cap threads.

Image

Next off was the head, which revealed these...............

Image

Head gasket was a three ply aluminium affair.

Image

Pistons on closer inspection seem to be Yoshi. :D Bore is 73mm, which I think equates to 1105cc :? I'm sure somebody will let me know for sure.

Image

Cam chain idlers seemed in good condition, well they were at the top of the motor, once I dug a little deeper, this is what I found. :(

Image

Image

Top end stripped, hopefully I'll find time to split the cases later in the week & once degreased I plan to soda blast them. This will take place outside, as long as the weather holds up. I imagine the back garden might look like a 'winter wonderland' once I've done it.  I will post pics.

This was running not so long ago  Hopefully no other 'surprises' when you split the cases.

Nice find with the Yoshi pistons, - is 1105 the absolute max the standard thou block can be taken too?
Any work noticable on the head to 'compliment' those pistons?

Questions, questions .....stick with it GB and keep us posted :up

Sanderz,

Split cases tonight...... no nasty surprises. :D

Had one half in the parts washer....................

.................................. That fluid still stinks, must have been in there since 1993!

From what I've learnt from this forum, 1105 is the largest you can go with standard liners, but 1075 is preferred by many, as it leaves a little more meat on the liners & reduces the chances of them cracking around the lower edges.

Not touched the head yet, that will be a 'mini project' in it's self. I'm trying to focus on getting the crankcases, cleaned & rebuilt, then fitted. Then I'll feel I've 'gone over the brow of the hill':D

Oh, I said no nasty surprises............ Forgot about this!
