Using the (patent pending) 'overnight oil drainage system' = open the draw under the bench, place bowl in said draw, attach 2 bungees from the rear of the bench to the front of the engine,(balancing the engine). Remove sump bung, leave to drain.

glad those bungees didn't snap
maybe ought to empty the draw next time :??

Looks better up top than mine did.... I doubt you'll need to borrow my factory tools to get the pistons out.

Shall follow this with interest.

A couple of the cam cap bolts have been bodged in with the aid of more silicon.
2 are stripped so will need 'helicoil' repair (any info on size, technique, price, links etc will be appreciated). Or am I better of giving head to engine shop?
Also 2 rocker cover threads are suspect.

the camshaft end caps are f**ked. The rubber is distorted
I'll need new ones of those (all 4), they are the type with the rubber inner and metal covering on the outer.

Cams, shims etc all out and labelled. Everything looks in good condition and quite clean.

I'm guessing that the head has been relatively recently skimmed?
Is there a sure fire way to tell?
The 'face' looks in great condition and the gaskets came off with ease.
ImageImageImage
does that look like a normal amount of 'carbon' build up?

Just had four cam cap threads repaired by Debbens and they charged me £40 to sort out a hideous mess of my own making. I have my own re-coiler but just didnt fancy it again as it requires a deft touch and you can get into trouble with them very easily.
60 to 65 INCH POUNDS when you screw them back in. There is a typo in the factory manual and that was repeated in the copy Clymer manual as well.
Cam end rubbers (D rubbers) are available, bought some a month ago.
They come in two different colours for different models!
Beware of the four outer bolts holding the casing halves together. They will want to snap off.
You must replace the small square block under the inlet side chain tensioner blade.
Looks to have been running weak ish.
