I can see why, plus - I don't think the accelerated rusting helped - or the boat anchor weight - shame though, it's nice to see them out and about - and I will again - that's the beauty of it.

Oh! and I'm definitely not going to mention the blocks of wood under the side stand.......... Yes mate it's definitely for a A4...... lying little scroat........

Alex, further to our chat at your workplace, whoever was the "lying little scroat" who sold you that sidestand on ebay,
you said wasn't an A4 one, was it 240mm?

I measured my A4 sidestand for you... it's 290mm from top of mounting bolt hole, to bottom tip, as shown in pic...

Thanks Jay.

I removed the fleabay stand I'd fitted last night and it measured 260mm which answers the leaning tower of Zed question.

The original very bent stand measures 290mm - I decided to fit it last night and was able to remove one of the blocks of wood - It could be bent straight but the mounting is too stretched to go again without sleeving it - and that's not going to be cost effective.

Interestingly the one on the Ltd is off the A1 and although a touch bent measures 295mm.

ZP pattern one looks robust and very similar to the one in Jay's pic.
#P340242 and is a very reasonable price @ £36.50.
Pattern Parts do one just like it too.
#PPT896940 but it's more expensive @ £54.95
Fleabay has them listed at various prices - but I would rather have on from a trusted source.
Saisei do the z1 pattern Doremi one.
#10443 which is also very well priced - but IMO looks less robust @ £35.95

I'm not going to worry about it too much just now - preparation of the temporary paint set will commence soon - so no rush.

In other news:

The A4 is off the ramp this weekend as over the next few weeks the Ltd is going on for a pre-season service 'n' polish up :D

I dont think the picture of the Doremi stand does it justice. I am sure it will be the same quality as the rest.

I think this is a better picture... I will let you decide if it is "beefy" enough

April Week 1 update

Thanks Dave, looks much stronger than on your site pic.

Last job before the Ltd got on the ramp was removing the oil cooler take off's and fitting the new old stock oil pipe assembly.

This gave rise to a few niggles, the bolt by the starter motor was a bugger to get to with the cam chain tensioner and carbs in the way.
Removing the tensioner made life easier but wrecked the well stuck new gasket, no spare either - Doh!
The new oil pressure wire I'd trimmed and fitted to the oil cooler take off was now too short and when trying to re-route it - the terminal broke off - Doh!!

Image

The fuel tap doesn't come with a tube filter for the 'On' position, not wanting to use an in-line filter I found one to fit the 7mm tube, It will need a little improvisation but it'll fit.

Image

As the slot for the paintset is a while away yet, temporary bodywork is under way, ebray special duck tail under prep.

Image

Some cheapo thin side panels were trimmed to fit - I had some Rover Green to hand - well it'll be green - ish!!

Image

Onwards and Upwards.... :)

April Week 3 update.

Went a bit mad with security after several very local burglaries.
One of the thefts was a neighbour who had his RG500 nicked out of his garage

The ramp has been occupied by the Ltd of late, I found myself replacing a few of the NOS zinc plated bolts I fitted during the build that had gone rusty, replacements are polished stainless items.
Then it was mostly polishing, polishing and more polishing, greasing, oiling, checking, tweaking, balancing and inflating - job done.

With the Ltd ready for the road and after brief swap round to give the RS a quick once over - I turned my attention back to the A4.

As the new gasket(s) had arrived I re-fitted the cam chain tensioner using a new NOS spring and a stainless tension bolt 'n' nut (lessons learned 'n' all).
Made up a new longer lead to the oil pressure sensor.
Swapped the old speedo drive-drive that was a touch worn for a NOS one I scored on flea bay.

Fitted a pattern replacement side stand which has cured the leaning tower of Zed issue.

After careful consideration I purchased the Zpower Emgo Tiawaneeze option - sorry Dave
I did look at a few genuine ones, all seemed to be at best bent, the only NOS one on offer was a tad expensive.

The result is as expected - much less angle of dangle, the quality and fit is very good - happy bunny - result.

ImageImage

Fitted up the temporary duck tail and side panels, just the tank to go and we have a complete bike - Yay :D

Image

Going to be interesting to see how easy it is to set up the points, if all goes to plan the first test firing will be early in May.

Was toying with the idea of a 900 themed ZZR1100 powered full on Sancturary styled modified as my next project - but I'm starting to get a 500cc ring ding ding stroker twitch coming on............

Such fun :D

May Week 3 update.

Plans for the early test firing were scrapped as work continues to get in the way!

So I took the mountain to Mohammed and took the temporary tank to work - it has taken 3 weeks of ten mins here and there to sand it down, rust kill, remove multiple dents - well most of them - and get it into primer - hope to get the top coats on in the next week or so.
Badges are being treated to some airfix paint to freshen them up.

Image

Ain't going to be a show stopper - but then it doesn't have to be.
4 weeks nearer to the 'Paint Slot'.

Spent a few mins searching out genuine bolts to replace the pattern ones I'd used on the sprocket cover cases on both the Ltd and the A4, finally tracked down the pesky little bleeders - NOS items are now ready to fit - originals are going to Mikey for Zinc plating.

After much deliberation I decided on using the MotoBatt MB10U battery (motorcycleproducts.co.uk).
Hate the bright yellow colour - but the fiqures are in it's favour 14.5AH and 175CCA - plus the added bonus of no risk of leaking acid everywhere! black tape should hide such a sin!

Received the very well priced replica air box silencer from Oztrailia (11016-008), looks exactly the same as what was originally fitted, sourced a genuine clamp from CMS - tick.
Shame to think how many of these are buried in landfill.........

After getting shelved earlier in the build Dyna Ignition and Coils became the topic of the moment once again - this was due to a lucky chance sale of some of the aprilia RS250 parts I had left over from an earlier build.
Wanting to keep originality - but also wanting to complete the build with maximum reliability - gave rise to a difficult decision.
So - next weekend if UPS deliver on time.............

In other news.

Ordered a float height gauge (the other Japaneeze manufacturer that we don't mention's one) - I did make my own out of an old sliding square - but it didn't work too well

Used the Ltd for work commuting all week, still not cured the poor starting - better - but still not as I want.. timing is if anything slightly retarded - but it still tries to turn the starter backwards on occasion - much puzzlement....... retard it further and it starts on the button - but runs like a sack - o - shite........ Mmmmmm.

After chancing on a ZZR1100 going for scrap I way toying with the idea of shoehorning the motor into a zed frame - until Mikey reminded me it was water cooled - DOH!

Such fun :D

May Bank Holiday Monday update.

After some serious spaghetti work on the Ltd the constant running - stopping - running - meant it got a bit hot - so while waiting for it too cool down I took a few mins to do a couple of jobs on the A4.

First I fitted up the new silencer from Oz - I'm leaving the fitting of the new genuine clamp fit until the 1st service.

Filled with oil - I changed from the planned semi synthetic 10w40 oil to Millers CRO 10w40 running in oil.
After speaking to the technical guy he said it would be perfect for the task - we'll see.

Image
Image

As the Ltd was still too hot to work on I rigged up my remote fuel tank and flushed the A4 carbs through - surprised to see some shards of brass in the drain bowls and some strange blackish globules!

Image

After another session on the Ltd - back to the A4.

Fitted up the MotoBatt battery and turned on and checked through the electrics.
Mmmmm - oil and neutral light the wrong way round - colours are right in the headlight - wrong in the blue connector in the elec panel - swapped them round.
Tail light and brake light are the wrong way round - harness is right - rear pattern loom right - rear pattern light - wrong colours - quick swap and were good to go.

Ign on - Check
Choke on - Check
Fuel on - Check

Took a few pics - just in case.........

Customary Holding of Breath - Prod the Start Button - and.........

Image

Dut - Dut - Dut - Barrrrrrrrrr - rummm- rummm - rummm - barrrrrrrr ImageImageImageImage

She runs Image

Brief puff of white smoke and one small oil leak at the head (which I was expecting) - result!
Clutch - in - gear lever down - first gear - clutch out - we have drive!
Clutch - in - lever up - second gear - third - fourth - fifth - oh you beauty!!!

Happy days :D
