Errrrrrr.... "interesting" post script to what appeared to be a very smooth resto job.
I share this as a cautionary tale to all you guys out there having a go at your own resto at the moment.

During the rebuild of the motor, I made a judgement about the "long term viability" of a couple of barrel stud threads in the crankcase upper half. Well, turns out those threads were not sufficiently good to tolerate the 30 ft/lb torque needed to secure the top hat nuts.

In short this means I now have to take out and strip down the ENTIRE ENGINE to have inserts machined into the crankcase

Now you can imagine just how thrilled I was when this became apparent a week or so ago. But now, a week on, I'm cool about it. Well sort of.

I'm most pissed about missing the Bucks Rally - just can't see she'll be back together for that - but we'll give it a go.

Bleedin' Zeds!!!! Or should that be bleedin' amateurs  :D

Sorry to hear that Chris

And I was going to ask you for help with my first engine strip next winter

Bakey, Chris mentioned in his write up, he wanted to keep the patina finish on some of the items, so it looked used and not showroom!

ah, i see. read the first few pages while doing it and tbh only scanned the last couple of pages to see the finished bike.

i think if i had gone to his level of detail though with the nuts n bolts etc, id have probably gone the whole hog and got my chrome looking the dogs

only my preference of course
