From under the covers - Z1000 A1

After the past 4 years of being neglected I have spent the last 5 Saturdays taking apart my Z1000. I am no mechanic or have the luxury of a workshop, machines etc. The bike is now back in the cramped space I call the garage and part stripped down, some chrome bits are at the London chroming company, recommended by this site, Thanks guys. All the paintwork is at Plastek having a facelift. The remaining chrome parts that are just in need of a good clean are having the old autosol treatment, as did the engine covers, they were covered in a white fluffy mould after being outside under a "breathable" bike cover for a year (never again).

I have owned the bike for ten years before that my brother had it for four. A local garage got it running and MOT?d (well it was done in their spare time so took about six months before it was on the road) after rescuing it from my parents back garden. I rode it for a year then had quite a bit of work done on it but in my naivety I had the engine coated and was disappointed once it started to flake off after a short period, so much for the wash and go theory.

So until I can save up for the engine to be blasted and polished it?ll have to do, hopefully the new paint work and shiny chrome will compensate.

I will post more pictures as I get the parts back on.







The clock glasses had what looked like water stains on the inside so have taken them apart cleaned the glass, rubbed down and sprayed the clock tops with Hammerite smooth gloss black. They look great. Plan to get on the road in April and make it to the Ace on the 20th.

How hard is it to get the clocks apart ? I had read that it is a right pain in the butt.

Re the clocks, boy that took some time, although I have a vice I decided that hold the clock in one hand and between my needs whilst kneeling down, just in case I squashed it in the vice. As vduk said in his thread a good quality screw driver and working from the bottom carefully open the chrome ring up, I went round two or three times to prise it open, its not easy but worth while to get a clean glass. I initially cleaned the glass with Mr Muscle window cleaner as it doesn?t leave any smears, then I remembered that meths is excellent for cleaning glass, boy did that do the trick. Just waiting for the clock rings to come back from the chromers. More pictures to follow once I?ve done a bit more.
