OK then, these things aren't finished when you roll 'em off of the ramp. There's usually a few teething problems. I will share them all here.
First problem was starting (I have been following TLC's own starting problems closely) I'm not sure if the Motobatt was a duffer, or just not up to the job with 180CCA.
The battery box that came with this project offered the room to fit something slightly bigger, so after a bit of research I purchased this 270CCA Behemoth.
Only issue was the terminals are reversed, which meant changing the battery leads. These were sourced & made to length by Vehicle Wiring Products.
All fits in nice and snuggly & after putting a few miles on the bike this afternoon, it seems to have done the trick.
Next problem, that I've just discovered this afternoon looks like a cracked cam cover.
Before taking the bike out today, I retorqued the head & nipped up all the cam cover bolts.
Hopefully the cover I recently picked up from Piggy recently will be a good one. I just need to have it machined to clear the APE Cam chain tower before I can try it out.

My cam cover has been cracked in the exact same place for a couple of years. Always assumed it was the oil cooler pipe weeping but running it recently without has shown that it is the cover.
There is no reason i can see as the chain hasnt hit the underside. I can only assume that one of the 'previous' has tried to bolt the cover down with the cam chain tensioner locked forward.
The new cover (thanks garyd) has a little more meat at that location so i suspect that KHI were aware of the problem.
That motobatt must be dead. I have been using a smaller one than that for three years (same battery) with no issues on 1170 11.5:1.
