KZ1000J 1982 US Import 'betty'

HELP HELP HELP! MUCHOS HELPOS!!!

I have a KZ1000J 1982 US Import which I am going to attempt to restore in time for next summer. I want to use the bike as my regular rider, I'm not interested in a museum piece, I want the bike to be functional and I will be making subtle mod's to its original appearance.
I'm not a mechanic I'm not even slightly skilled with nut's, bolt's, spanners and hammers but I would like to attempt some of the work myself and the more precise work will be sent to people who know what their doing!

So where do I start? I have never heard the engine run, I bought it as a project so I need to do some test's. should I be thinking of a full rebuild or can I start smaller and work out if I have a usable engine or not?

here are a few pics, any other suggestions will be much appreciated.
