Well back to the bike

If you remember when I started stripping the bike I found that the chain tensioner had a jubilee clip around it, at that point I pressed the protruding rod and the tensioner appeared to work fine, well I'd been riding the bike and all was ok.

Image

Well, as we are getting near to fitting the head and new chain I thought I better look a bit closer at the tensioner, I decided to remove the cap nut so that I could check the threads and have the body aqua blasted.

Now I know why the jubilee clip was fitted, in the past the thread had been broken, the cap was on by no more than two threads.

And no I didn't break it, it's an old break.

Time to buy a new tensioner....

If you want an 'original' type I can probably dig you out an old one from a Unitrac, but I've been lead to believe that they can 'back off' on the overrun, effectively altering the valve timing to the point that your valves will meet your pistons.

Personally, I'd use a manual type as supplied by most of the 'performance' outlets, but if it's originality you're after, let me know and I'll find you one.

Thanks for the offer Ginger Bear, I pondered a manual tensioner this morning when I discovered the fault but decided to order a new body and cap and keep things original.

Hopefully there'll be no more surprises and I can get this engine bolted together and start building the bike up, seems like I've done very little for ages due to waiting on missing parts etc

Cheers, Paul

So, today's progress, the engine is now fully built , new std pistons, rings, pins, head fully rebuilt, barrels honed, new timing chain, new chain tensioner, all genuine Kawasaki parts used where possible.

Still need to clean the side of the fins back to alloy on the head.

Now we can start fitting some parts back on and it starts looking like a bike again.

A couple of photos , all black does not make for great pictures though.

Not at the moment Jack, the bike had no rear guard at all when bought, I got this one from Germany. There's one on EBay at the moment but I can't justify £250 when there's plenty other stuff to buy for the bike. I know there are full length fibreglass copies available but I'd want an original one tbh.

I sold a full length mudguard to Paul Doran that I don't think he's used for £50 a few years ago, might be worth a PM :?

After all, it's what the 'club' is all about.

Cheers, Paul

Cover still fits, nice to see some colour breaking the black up a bit, just a trial fit as they are off to a Flying a Tiger shortly :)

So this weeks pension went on four rubber plugs for the end of the head/cams and a few o rings and oil seals. This allowed me to fit the rocker cover and then pass the oil pipes over and get them fitted at the crankcase end.

Coil brackets have been powder coated so that let me fit the coils and clean and fit up a bit more of the wiring.

After a lot of cleaning the carbs have also been refitted.

Road trip next week to drop the bodywork off at Flying Tiger, factory white colour scheme.

Cheers, Paul
