okay I discovered that one of the exhaust sprocket bolts a little 6mm item had unscrewed itself and eventually it came out far enough to lock the camshaft against the side of the camchain tunnel
take a look at the damage

end result the camchain snapped
and judging by the damage there was more than a knocking sound I will bet there was a loud bang then silence
but You pays Your money and take Your chances
overall it is not too bad
I do have lots of engine spares particularly Z1000H
so it back to stripping the rest of the motor and start removing all that grime and paint
take a look at the damage

wow looks like a great basis Paul ,at least most of the parts are thereas well.
Just one thing the seat cover is not original .I can send you pics of an original cover if you want .I have a cover but i need to find someone who can copy it or repair mine .If you need anything giv me a hollar i may be able to help.
