No news from Harris so have been pressing on with the electrics and instruments. I got a guy from ebay to make a custom dash and rear cans to take the stack and motogadget speedo. It needed a bit of filing but it all fits now. Not sure about the final finish, I think I may keep the brushed front and get the cans anodised black. The buttons control the speedo/tacho functions and the ignition is a new pattern Z900 item. The dash will bolt underneath the top yoke using the same holes as a Z1 would. I wanted something in a vaguely Z1 style, so two separate gauges but using modern stuff. Ideally I would have a matching pair but there are very suppliers for aftermarket bike gauges.

Jason

Where were you when I needed you? That looks like a good solution but it's too late for my project. I really wanted white dial faces so I'm not unhappy with my solution. I also wanted a very simple modern style. In a perfect world motogadget would do a simple tacho or Stack would do a simple speedo.

Maybe for the next project.....

im building a bit of a modified 900 and what seems to crop up is some parts you fit never seem to be right as your always coparing them to the original look, some one once said a modified 900 should have the standard bodywork clocks and headlight which iagree with, but mine dosnt but i seem to be drifting that way, yours has the roots of being a very nice bike to me, kawasaki hit the nail on the head when they designed the 900 and its a look that carnt seem to be beeton

Harris called yesterday to say that the bike was finished and suggested that I have a look before the frame is powder coated. This is how it looks now. The shock mounts and torque arm mount have been welded onto the swingarm and all the frame bracing is done. Lester has made up new bigger plates near the rear upper shock to give extra support. The rear indicator mounts were also a problem. The LH one was badly damaged and it's actually quite a complex construction. So we decided to cut it off, build a new much simpler one and fit rigidly mounted stems.
He has also made a simple and neat chain guard.

Lester has also made a small battery box which will house a super b battery. What you can see in the photos is the complete electrical system minus wires. The LH side takes the regulator rectifier and the starter relay (which is a ZX9R one). The RH side houses the m-unit brain which replaces the fuses and relays. At the front there will be two small durite busbars and a tiny motogadget relay for the headlamp flasher. I wanted the electrics to be as small and as modern as possibly.

I should be able to collect the coated frame and all the parts next week.

For the indicators, I wanted original style but with LED innards. The picture shows an aftermarket but original style indicator from Zpower. I designed some simple aluminium plates and bought some bright LED modules from a US firm called Radiantz. The modules stick to the plates with double sided tape, the plates screw onto the original mounting points and voila LED indicators.
