Oh No! Another Z1-B Coming Back to Life (With Pics)

#1 PostAuthor: pertonpc » Wed Aug 29, 2012 3:14 pm

Hi Guyz,

I did a thread on my Z1-B project back in 2010 but it got trashed in the great meltdown.Very briefly I got a bike like this from Rick Brett -

Image

Sprinkled some elbow grease and fairy dust on it for 12 months or so and it turned into this -

Image

Then it got a bit bogged down in a big debate over paint sets, which supplier, which painter, which colour etc. After viewing loads of pictures and taking advice on here I chose Jeff Saunders from Z1 Enterprises to supply a Candy Super Red PMC paint set as recommended by GEZ635.

Here's what came -

Image

Superb safe packaging thanks Jeff - which eventually revealed these little beauties -

Image

I have fiddled with a couple of other things this season - new CHOKE lever and Carb Idle Screw, Genuine Petcock, Yuasa battery, non-vibrating factory mirrors (that's a relief - thought I was getting the shakes  )

...and an upgrade - or is it a downgrade? back to a genuine STANLEY sealed beam unit.

So she has ended up looking a bit like this for Autumn 2012 -

Image

A few lads on here were discussing the merits of PMC paint sets on here recently so thought this might be of some interest - especially as the supplier is a member.

Loads more detail & pics on my rebuild website here if anyone wants to look -
http://www.zedrider.co.uk/z1-b.html

I have stuck a few fitting tips that I picked up on there as well. One good one is blank or mask off the filler hole when you are fiddling with the tank catch spring. It will save you hours of fishing around in your tank with a magnet   to get the bugger out again.

Cheers from Mark

Now I may be a little bias here but I much prefer the red to the blue even though I'm forever being told the 'original' blue is the best colour the Big Zed came in...

Looks fab!. :)

Fantastic
What a difference you can see a lot of hard work and no doubt cash has gone in to the build.
I have used a candy red pmc set on one of my projects and have to say they are very good. Got the supplier (Z power) to fit badges and tank cap on for me to save damage.

Now where did I leave my Keys!

Cheers Guys,

Jules if you mean the original 4 into one from the project bike it cleaned up quite well and got me through MOT and first season with no worries.
Although it did spit out a few American acorns when it first sprang back to life after a long slumber.
Then it went to a loving home to see out it's days in Zed performance heaven - new owner has already commented on this thread - no more clues

I agree that the original blue is also a stunning colour :) . It's very difficult to have a meaningful debate on the two without the bikes in front of you though - Reason is different cameras and even the same camera from different angles can make them look such different shades.
I could post several pics all claiming to be an original Z1-B blue and all quite different. The PMC blue is a bit greeny blue compared to UK Kev's colour - which we know is from the factory.

Hi Thanks for those comments,

The blue paint set went to a lad from Colchester, along with a repro gas cap and the original petcock - so that was a massive help towards the cost of the new set :D .

Some of the TOWIE crowd on here may get to see it out and about at some point ... but the chap had a Z13, 2 complete Z1s and a project Z1 on the go so they can't all be getting out that much I reckon.

Regards the red or blue debate - I found out my bike had originally been built as a red one, so getting it back to factory spec was one factor. Also I found this slide show really helpful to work out what a red one would look like from various angles - Take a look -

Cheers Andy,
For the record I will prefer your Z1 any scheme... soon as she is back on the road.
You are one of the guys I spoke to a lot during my rebuild and I really want to see your machine out of the woods and ready for some mileage.

Are we looking at 2013 now mate??

From Mark

p.s. Your cheque is in the post for choosing the red as your fave. Perhaps I should start a poll on here
