Been a good day today. Got the yokes and steering stem from my friend. Looks brilliant on the bike.

The edges were a bit sharp so I rounded them off using the whatever-it-is-called-in-english mill with a fine radius steel on it. Result as follows.

I made the yokes as replicas of the original ones, only difference is the spacing between the fork legs in order to accommodate the bigger wheel and wider discs.

Mock-up with clocks and one of the handlebar risers.

Gonna be hard at work tomorrow finishing up all the remaining work on the yokes. Need to Helicoil all holes and I need to tap a M16x1,75 (or a regular M18x1,5) thread in the top of the steering stem for the top screw. Also gonna fit the bearings and paint the yokes. Hopefully I'll have some pictures up tomorrow night of the finished item. :)

Nice yokes, on mine I used Zephyr bar clamps as they are low profile. looking forward to seeing the finished bike.

SO, have you finished the bike? Did you have chain clearance problems?

Hey guys, long time.

Gonna start working on this girl again soon. It's pretty much all there except the front and rear wheel as well as the electrics.

Anyway.

Been an eventful year in many ways.

In early May, I got myself a Yamaha MT-01 (that big 1700cc V-twin) and had a blast on it all summer (most of it anway, I'll get to that). Worked my ass of at work to be able to fund all the fun projects. Enjoyed riding the new bike some more and just having a great year.

Image

Then came Sunday, August 12th and it wasn't so great anymore. Me and a friend took our bikes out for a spin after fitting his GSXR1000 with my (sold them to him now) Ohlins Road & Track forks to see how it improved the handling. I think we left a while after lunchtime and set course for some nice roads south of where we live. Had a blast with amazing weather (18 degrees and sunny) and the best roads we have up here in the north. However, since we had been riding for long miles at a good pace (no dragging knees like the posers do but still fast) we were getting a bit tired and the sun was setting. We were riding up along probably the nicest road we have within a reasonable distance up here. Lots of twists and bends and ups and downs. We came to this left hand corner which didn't look remarkable at all, and in hindsight, wasn't. But at that exact moment, it was as if the stars aligned just in the way to cause a major f*ck up.

Tired in my body, lack of attention, dirty visor (blue iridium visor added to that), sun right in my eyes. All this caused me to misjudge the corner a bit, plus the fact that this corner banks heavily so I ended up in the gravel next to the tarmac, still on my wheels though, at 60mph.

"Oh shit!" was my initial reaction but I managed to keep the bike up and almost get it on the road again but riding at 55-60mph in loose gravel is easier said than done with Dunlop Sportsmart tires.

I got tossed of the bike as it cut down into the ditch to the right of me and I landed left-side first on the road, dislocating my shoulder, banging my head pretty bad (should have seen the hole in the helmet), scraping through my leathers on my left knee opening up a huge wound all the way down to the bone and broke my left ankle.

Image

Bike got completely wrecked. Front forks completely twisted, rear end and exhaust too. Tank busted, broken engine-covers, etc. Got written off in a minute.

Me? I got away with a broken ankle, which considering the circumstances is nothing short of a miracle. The bike landed face first in a concrete duct and that could have been me.

Got operated and fitted with some titanium to hold me together and after that I've been jumping around 10 weeks with a cast. Removed it a couple of weeks ago so now I can finally walk on my own again but getting the leg muscles back takes time.

While I was healing I got myself a new bike. I suppose this is proof that us motorcyclists suffer from some kind of disease. You'd think I'd get a more "tame" bike but fact is I went the opposite direction so I can alternate between track-riding and the road.

So, I got myself one of these.

Image

A KTM RC8R from 2009. 4000km on the clock.

And that's pretty much how the story goes up until now. Been fiddling with the RC8 fitting it with some new electronics and a new exhaust but I'm pretty much finished with that now so I'll be moving onto the Kawasaki soon to get it ready for the road again.

Looking forward to spending some time here again. :)

Still limping like a wounded animal but my head is where it's at (mostly anyway). I had tons of problems with my short-term memory the weeks after the accident. Couldn't remember if I had taken my meds five minutes earlier sometimes.

The RC8 is actually perfect for a big guy. I'm not supertall but I'm around 187cm and over over 100kg and it's just about right for me. Like sitting on any other bike. I've ridden it before and it is by far the most comfortable sportsbike out there.
