Gary. That`s bad news but not really too surprising that they need money spending.

I had previously spoken to Steve about brake calipers and came away with the conclusion that spending £100 on them was no guarantee they wouldn`t need another hundred to refurb. I got mine for £35 and will have to spend at least another £50 as long as the pistons clean up okay. If not they will not be such a bargain.

As for the carbs, mine arrived from California. RS34`s in nice clean condition. I tried to fit them but found the bracket won`t adjust enough. It turns out they were originally intended for an FZR600. I spoke to Allens and the chap told me that I must at least have a clean and service. The new brackets are easy enough and I will also need a new throttle linkage bar. Cost will be circa £300. The original bargain of £240 starts to look a little more realistic then.

And that`s beside the customs wanting £280 in VAT and charges.

I have put in an appeal

Hi Al,

you may be right about the throttle valves, the guy in Australia said they were Bakelite.
I have put the centre stand on and had a better look at the side stand and it seems that it goes to far forward, almost as if someone has cut 5mm off the mounting connected to the frame.

as far as I know the engine is original, if you suggest new pistons and a rebore what size would fit with the original 17mm small ends and what make?

Hi Chris,
seems to bad news all round for carbs...
Allens quoted me £220 to fit 4 x throttle valves and brass buttons, £50.00 for the service and if I wanted them externally cleaned they would have to send a new quote.

so, I best get saving....

all the best and thanks for you input

A 75mm Wiseco piston kit with a bored out 1089cc cylinder block is a good match for 36mm flatslide carbs.
75mm bore gives approx 1170cc.
The GPz1100 B1/B2 and 1100 A shaft models have 1089cc cylinder blocks.

Hi Jack,

thanks for the answer, i'll add these to the list...

I forgot ask can I use the same cylinder block fitted to the J1 or do i have to get a GPz version?

You can't take the 1000J 998cc block out to 1170cc.
You'll need the 1089cc block as the Wiseco kit doesn't include liners.
The 1100 A shaft model also has a 1089cc cylinder block and may be easier/cheaper to source.
It doesn't matter if the standard bores are worn, etc as they'll be getting taken out to 75mm from 72.5mm.

As Jack says above plus;
There is a possibility of boring youre own barrels to either 1076 or 1105cc.

Both these kits if still available come with 17mm pins and so no need to change anything.
You might be aware that when boring standard 1089 barrels to get the 1170 kit in, some unscrupulous people will charge for two re-bores. That is two passes of the boring bar!!

Top two items on page 69 of this catalogue.
K1076 safe-ish and K1106 a little less safe and more expensive.
I guess you would also be able to use the standard 1100 cc head gaskets too.

More like 4 passes with the boring bar,0.5mm each time.
Best to use a 1 piece Cometic copper gasket,75mm.

He's a fine bloke and maybe can help you out with a single slide.

A little slow at the moment, the engines out of the frame and as usual been collecting bits and pieces.

got my second set of Mikuni flatslide carbs which seem to be in better condition than the first set. took awhile to arrive as they went from the USA to Canada then on to me good news though no import duty.

got a nice stainless steel adjustable side stand from Japan.

wiring loom looks a little messy and may have to be replaced and the engine mounting bolts aren't the original ones

that's about it for the moment.
