My Z1 project

Follow along as rebuild (not restore) this tired old Z1. It had a hard life as the second owner purchesed it used in 1974 and sold it to me two weeks ago. I have never ridin the bike. I started it up,it smoked like hell. Put it in the back of my truck and brung her home.
Here she is. A very sad and tired looking motocycle


I already installed a new rear tyre mounted to a nice D.I.D 3 1/2" wheel
However it will be off again soon for new swing arm bushings. Also you can see I trashed the original handle bars for a set of Z1R (drag) bars.
Plus the bike got a well needed Bath. It was filthy


Last night lots of ale and removed the motor. It is on it's way to Performance cycle for rebuild

As you can see in the first photo the original 73 carburetors are gone and set of 26's fitted.
I had a set 29mm smoothbores that had some stripped out threads and were useless. I swooped the 29's to WiredGeorge for a set of 75 28's
The 28's arrived today WOW!! look at these carbs. Completely taken apart
ultrasonic cleaned new gaskets hardware

I am sure with 50K miles the cams valves ,everything is wore out. I will try to salvage the original pistons and just re-ring. I have perfect extra 903cc block and a 74 Z1 head that was rebuilt new guides, seals ,bench shimed

Heres a little bonus photo. My good friend stopped by as the weather is still very good for mid November. Zxr1200 built right. this bike has run
8.6 in the 1/4 mile. Yikes!!

Today I removed the front wheel ,forks so I can easliy replace the steering neck bearings. The old bearings felt like a ratchet



While off the bike I am going to install new fork seals,dust boots and polish up lower fork legs.
The original seemless forks ears are inexcellent condition and will polish up nice

Well it's been along winter and I have no Heat in the garage. Now spring is soon so it is time to get my arse in gear
Sorry for all the lost photos. My harddrive in my laptop top crashed and i lost alot of photos (everything) .
I Installed new tapered steering bearing. Rebuilt the front forks with new seals and dust boots.Replaced the chrome headlight bucket with original and fitted the the grab bar and indicators. I had a nice set of original rear shocks and also had a super nice set of mudgaurds. All the chrome is in excellent condition
The 3 1/2 D.ID. rear wheel is temporary original wheels will be relaced and new tyres.

I bought a Z1 tank and tail with excellant original paint from Ralph pitlock @paintworkz. No original sidecovers so he is color matching some PMC repo side covers with lacquer paint. These are the only photos I have. I should get the body set next week. there was a dent in the tank he if fixing and then he is going to hand rub everything out.



Here is the origianal Z1 tail with the repo sidecove and color match paint,looks good enough.When installed on the bike I do not think anyone will notice the differance

Here is a photo of my original rust free original paint Z1 tank. has a few dents. We decided to fix the dents and color match the paint.



Here is the tank after respray.The Orange is a bit darker but will look good for a everyday rider,non show bike. Final results after wet sanding and bufffing and installing the emblems it should look great
