Yes steve you are right its chemically stripped, however in saying that you can blast it off, polished couple casings last week for guyzed that he had blasted which wernt too bad, but most people when they blast it off they tend to use a very aggresive medium which makes for hard work polishing more so with engine casings etc as the medium can inbed itself in the alloy.

Hi, might be a bit late now but i found this gallery of cafe racer types yesterday as my bike might get the same treatment over the winter. Not just zeds but may help with ideas for your bike mate...look forward to seeing it progress.

I don't have the time or money to give it anything more than a cosmetic overhaul in the meantime. Longterm it will be getting some serious work..........I hope. Cheers for the link. Some great bikes there. I am going to get another paint set to give a different look too.
