Emission control drillings.....

#31 PostAuthor: Buckle » Fri Feb 13, 2009 9:30 pm

Just a thought about the drillings in the cylinder head for the emission control rubbish. I had a (K)Z1000 with a similar set up that also looked hideous! In order to fit a UK type cam cover I tapped the holes in the head and made up some stainless threaded plugs that screwed into holes so they were flush. Loctited them in so no leaks and hey presto!

Might be worth considering :?:

Buckle,
I have done similiar on other stuff and did try the 10mm tap in the holes but it's not quite the right size and 12mm would be to big.

I was gonna drill it larger but did not want any bits dropping inside.

I think i'll run it as is and if the engine's ok then make some blanking plates.
Cheers

Probably the longest running project ever, but ist slowly getting there.

Things left to do:
1. Finish wiring
2. Repair /find a decent seat (2:4)
3.Tank badges
4. Bleed brakes.
5 Tank badges (I have lost the littel screws I bought DOH!!)
6. New front tyre.
7.Handle bar grips.
8 Petrol and Oil.
9 New Battery.
10. Clean thoroughly.

Should only take me another three years.

In the Meantime here are the current pics, showing
the brand new Laser exhaust. (Which typical aftermarket pattern stuff had to have 3" cut off the link pipe to get it to fit, WHy does the pattern stuff never fit???)

It might be slow, but you have made a massive amount of progress - won't take long to finish those last few jobs off! Shocks look good!

Well done. I'm impressed with all the detail here. At first, I thought you'd done all this in about six months, then clocked the other dates! Your still way ahead of me though with my own 'one-day' restoration still sitting here 25 years on....? A worthy result and a good story too. I feel inspired again.

Thanks for the comments guys. It has been a long road but only because I kept getting diverted to other stuff along the way. The 650's pretty simple and done on a budget.
I think most of it was done in the first six months, then the rest forever.

Piggy the emission stuff was blanked off, with grub screws threaded into the head and loctite applied.

If I enjoy the bike I could see me going for a GPZ head and 810 kit in the future.
