hi chaps,
my friend bought a z1000 a1 from one of the lads on here last year but hasnt been used, he wants to get it on the road but it has a starting problem.
it will only start when it has a squirt of that spray gas into the intake.once its running its fine but when its turned off it wont start unless the gas is sprayed in again.
the bike has 4 into 1 pipe and cone filters fitted as the std airbox was removed.
any ideas lads ?

Hi Qwacker,
First thing is to strip the carbs and fully clean them, sounds like the jets etc are blocked, poss from old fuel, When its warm will it start without the spray or is it all the time. Another possibility is sticking piston rings or valve clearance. Rings will maybe sort themself's out after its been run for a bit, but first thing to do is the carbs.
good luck,
peter.

This particular problem is quite common and very easily sorted...
See below..
Carry a can of that spray gas at all times...

Low compresion can cause bad starting,
like i said rings/valves etc but it does sound like carbs, though things like new plugs, nippon denso ones are best, and make sure battery is fully charged. Low battery will cause a weak spark, though using the kickstart usually works ok.
these are the people to get them from, very quick delivery and very good price.

W24ES-U should be the plug you need. (as long as they are the same as my z1a)
they are £6.21 for a set off 4 plus postage.

quick update.
we had the carbs off today and took the tops and bottoms off, slides out jets out but they were ok.
put it back together but its very lumpy and just has no power. my rd250 is quicker lol.
the bike has a aftermarket electronic ignition fitted so maybe thats an issue.
also the bike has a z900 engine fitted and the std airbox has been removed for cones.

Not quite so funny as you think, engines can get addicted to easy start and the likes.
