Can anyone remind me if the original steering damper fits straight onto the bottom yolk without a bracket, I can't remember seeing a bracket but have been told I need one.
Thanks for any advice

Ah, I must have been given duff info, I seem to remember it going onto the underside of the yolk but that was going on 20 years ago

DurhamZ1B. I think you have resolved your problem, however, just in case you haven't. All the Z1, Z1A and Z1B's have the bottom yoke of the triple tree, with a boss that is drilled with a 8mm clearance hole, to take damper. Z900 & Z1000 do not have this hole, however, it may be drilled, in this bottom yoke to facilitate a damper.
Make sure you have the bracket on the RHS downtube of the Z1B frame, that takes the other end of the damper. Many are broken-off and filed smooth and painted.
As a foot-note: This down-tube bracket is often broken off, as a result of the steering damper seizing-up and causing the bracket to break and can cause damage to the head fins.

Thanks, I had mine re-welded back to the frame many moons ago after the problem you mentioned, but I didn't know that it could cause fin damage. I will keep this in mind.
Thanks also Mick.
