Z650 carb overflow, errrm, overflowing

#1 PostAuthor: m1ks » Sun May 17, 2009 10:40 pm

OK,
Quickie, Still awaiting delivery of my standard airbox for the Z so spent today fiddling about and tidying up the shiny bits on the Virago prior to delivery to new owner next week.
Moved the Z to park it once i'd packed all away, started the motor and let it run for a short while.
Stopped and pushed it over to storage and then noticed a puddle of fuel, on inspection it appeared to be coming from Carb 2 overflow, (viewed from left of bike), As you'll likely know it's a vacuum feed fuel line so no vacuum, no fuel.
I'm wondering if the needle valve is the likely culprit here, odds are they've never been touched and the short running has sucked enough petrol in to fill and overflow the bowl?

Sounds like a sticking float needle or maybe the float tang needs adjusting, if the carbs have'nt been done in a while or the bike has been lying up for any time, you would be as well to take out the carbs and give them the full strip and inspection/clean anyway.

m1ks, same prob on my ST, I got a rebuild kit and fitted the needle valve and seat and that fixed it. zpower or ebay do them about £15. i have same problem again on a different carb but i reckon fuel tap is leaking and filling the bowls when bike isn't running. Maybe check that too.

Great and v useful thanks.
I know the petcock works, I checked that early on and the vacuum feed is OK so hopefully a quick strip and clean might do the trick, new needle valves if not.

On that note do you or any other guys on here have a recommended parts supplier?
