Hi folks,
Anyone know if these plates are legal and where you can get them?

only legal if your bike is registered before sometime in 1973. not exactly sure what the dates are,ive got an april 1973 z1.and it cant have them.

Rod, one of those things; a mate has a 2yr old Bonnie with a small black metal plate, never had problems but yeah, technically as hillbilly says, legally it depends if its pre-'73

Cheers Lads, it's for my VN1500 Drifter, which is styled like an old 1940's Indian, so I reckon it's alright.

replacement legal yellow n black plate=£20

total=£90. and he was p;ss;d off.

I'm in agreement with MickZ1a.
It doesn't matter if your vehicle is styled like or looks like an old un, police are not thick and they know what is and isn't valid
A neighbour of mine tried it with his 82 Capri, he thought he'd be OK as it had a private plate and they've made them for years.
A local, (young), copper spotted it in the high street and asked him what year it was, he tried the, oooohh 70 something and the reponse was, don't take the piss D***, that's a laser, about 82 or 3, get the plate changed.
He was lucky, we live in a small place and the copper knew him and gave him a friendly warning but he could have been fined and given a producer costing even more to make it legal.
If you want a fine for the sake of having a pretty plate for a week or so go for it, alternatively, get an old classic brit or Harley or something.
If you just want the look for shows get one printed up and attach it with velcro at the show, remove it afterwards.

Chestnut did the aluminium one - about £25 all in.... and wanted to see a copy of me reg doc V5 & proof of address...

Yellow with Black Digits Metal Pressed Motorcycle Number Plate (2 1/2 Digit Size) Sizes Available: (9'' x 6'') (6 1/2'' x 6 1/2'') (9 1/2'' x 6 1/2'') (7 1/4'' x 6 1/2'') ( 9'' x 7'')

the 6 1/2'' x 6 1/2'' is for six characters.

Posted before but if it turns really nasty DVLA can take that number off you for abuse of the number. £
You then have to re-register and apply for an age related or other plate. £ Next comes the inspection £ for a new registration. £ Then your insurance company wont insure it £ because it has been altered and then you cant sell it £ cos its got a mickey mouse age related plate on it.


Dont do it unless your entitled.

Q plates can be black and silver if that helps anyone. I had a Q plate JMC framed gixxer and had one fitted to go with the paintwork. Only got stopped once and once I explained the law on Q plates was allowed to carry on.

Obviously the new "SPECS" cameras rely on the correct font and size to read a number plate, I am assuming that they also rely on the reflective of the plate to actually locate and read it in the first place ? It seems to me that they won't be able to locate a Black/Silver plate on a vehicle as it isn't reflective hmnnn . . . food for thought . . . .

Rick.... that's interesting.... Shame - coz me Trumpet is gonna struggle to top the national speed limit anyhow... even down hill... so not much advantage to me
