Hi all,
does anybody know how to test a rec/reg unit or where to get it tested, I have no charge at mo, we have checked alt and thats fine, I just checking conections etc for any corrosion etc, the reg/rec unit I have decovered is pretty new, looks like one of those from z-power, so I"m thinking is this a faulty one or has it blown, or something else may be causing the no charge, I have no history of the bike, so cant say what has been done or not,
Andy..

Start the bike with charged battery, get a digital multimeter, set the bike to high idle at 4000rpm, put the red lead of meter to pos terminal of battery, the black lead to neg. terminal of battery.
The voltage should read nearly spot on 14.5v, definately no more, as you raise the revs a little, the voltage should also stay the same and not rise as the revs are upped.

Official Kawa manual gives details.

Hi,
we did that, and came to the conclusion that the reg/rec was possible suspect, what I was wondering if the actual unit reg/rec can be check out off the bike?

Hi Andy, there is a test you can do with the unit off the bike and disconnected, this is as follows but is for the standard seperate regulator unit.
Set your meter to Ohms scale, put one probe to black earth wire and the other probe to the pin for the brown lead, you should get a reading of 1000 to 1100 ohms resistance or 1 to 1.1 kohms.
You can do this test between any of the other leads and you should have no resistance.
If you do it between the black lead or the brown lead and any other lead you should also get a no resistance reading.
If resistance readings differ from this then the unit is faulty, this is according to the kawasaki Industries manual I have for the Z1 range.
Hope this helps, maybe someone else has another method on here for out of circuit test, I ended up ordering a new unit from Z-power anyway as Reg was knackered on my bike.

No worries Mick, here's the other out of circuit test that was given for checking the regulator, it's a bit more involved because you have to more or less simulate an in circuit state

Hi all,
just got a meter, not too hot on these meters, but the reading I am getting, with the meter on oms, on the 2M I "m getting 025, on the 200K 26.2, 20K wont read too high, so my guessing is reading is too high?
any ideas?

I found the pdf file on this website useful at the weekend for the same issue you have

Hi,
thanks for all the info, we have now sorted the problem, many thanks to mark for sorting it for me, turned out to be a dud fuse, the fuse looked ok, but was u/s, just goes to show, put a test on it to test it, so now we have charging, harrahh, bike is runing good now too, one of the plugs played up , a new one too, so will get to ride it abit more now too, I done about 100 miles on it so far, and I love it,
