Hey all, I'm swapping a shift shaft on a 75 Z1B motor. I don't have the manual but I'm fairly mechanically inclined. I've swapped shift shafts before, but they were on dirt bikes and they came out the clutch side of the motor. It doesn't look like this is the case with the Z.

So here's the question: How do I get the shift shaft out? I really don't want to start in on it w/out knowing what I'm getting into.

Hello Xpopher, shift shaft or selector fork shafts as we call them over here come out through the transmission cover side. Remove the engine, remove the front sprocket, transmission cover and sump, turn the engine upside down and you will see the selector forks, check these have not blued up on either face as this indicates a bent selector fork, which is much more likely than a bent shaft, you will need to remove the forks to check this, I can remove my selector forks without seperating the crankcases but I am not sure if you will be able to, because my lower crankcase have been modified. You can get them out on a Z1000 a1 to a4 without splitting the cases - if you can drop the sump in situ you don't have to take the engine out
