z900 Piston Rings

#1 PostAuthor: paulstrees » Thu Apr 09, 2009 4:34 pm

Just bought genuine Kawasaki rings, top ring as usual + the oil scraper ring, but the middle one now has a rebate in the centre of it , anyone know which way up this faces.

Should be a mark on one face of the ring, if so this faces up . no markings usually means ring can go in either way but this is not always the case, although there should be a slip of paper in the packet showing the correct orientation if different from the above.

You might need a magnifying glass to see the marks.
A big one like what Jack uses to read his Mills & Boon.

Paulstres, Clymer's maintenance Manual, 900 & 1000 Fours [73-80] shows a picture of both 900cc & 1000 ring configuration.
The 2nd ring is different for each in the illustration.
They show the 900 as having the rebate on the outside and mounted downwards.
The 1000 as the rebate on the inside and mounted upward
I can see your dilemma. Let's hope you can read the tiny marks to show which side points upwards. Otherwise, I would have this second ring with the inner rebate (as per 1000) to the upside.
