Hi
I have a 77 Z1000 and even after having the carbs sent of for resoration I cant seem to stop them leaking fuel - anyone had a similar problem and know how to resolve the problem? I have even put a new fuel tap on the tank.

I am also looking for a good mechanic within half hour of Chichester to wotrk on the Z anyone know any?

where is the fuel leaking from? if it is out of your overflow pipes it could be dirt from your tank causing it by blocking your float needles.

If its from the "bowl - carb" interface, the gaskets can dry & shrink if not used for a few months.... They do sometimes expand after a bit though

It seems to leak fro around the bowl and the drain screw do I need to take the bowls off and put new gaskets on?

I would put new gaskets on as a matter of course, drain plug and float bowl.
I always rub vasaline into paper/fibre type gaskets, it stops them going hard and makes them easier to take off in the future with out them sticking to the surfaces.

You may need to just check that the gaskets and seals are ok and fitted,if fuel is coming out of the overflow pipes it could be that the floats are sticking and may be nothing serious,or it could be your float levels but these don,t just tend to just go out unless they have been manhandled or a faulty float.who did your carbs

PaulB, with these carby leakage problems, it is good to identify exactly where the leak is coming from, and which particular carby.
There are 4 main areas.........

The joining gasket
The overflow brass nipple.
The drain plugs
The Tee pieces (thanks Zedrider... I forgot that one)

By far the easiest to solve is the drain plug, which will simply be replacing the rubber o-ring.
The overflow leakage is usually to do with the needle & seat which sometimes do not seal. Clean & or replace. On rare occasions it could be a hailine fracture of the float level tube (requires removal of bowls to check/fix).
In my opinion the gaskets do not usually leak, unless the float levels are set too high. when the fuel level is too high, it is pretty much the same level, or lower, than the join. The float controls the level, hence, the shut-off of fuel, via the needle & seat.

It is difficult to check some of these things, even when the bowls are removed. With regarding removal of carbs on the Z1000 as with the Z1 & Z900, there is always a reluctance, as those air-box rubbers are usually so hard to re-assemble.

ive been haveing a problem keeping the petrol in the carbs too i found the problem on mine was the fuel in t peice it has o rings on there mine had become britle and thats what was causeing the problem looked for all the world like it was comeing from the bowl to carb face . worth haveing a look at .

I cannot really add more advice than is already on this thread.

But having just stripped my carbs and put them back together again a week or so ago, I did note two of my carbs weeping slightly from the carb body/ bowl join. This was only when the bike was left on its sidestand tho'. As the gaskets were paper based I left them, avoiding the tempation to remove the bowls again on the basis these types of gasket tend to swell a bit and stop leaking...which they now have.

The carbs should not really be leaking from the carb body/ bowl join, as normal fuel level is below this level. I would check the float level (I just cobbled together a simple manometer to check this) and/ or if any fuel is flowing down the overflow.

If you go as far as taking the bowls off...when you put the bowls back on (this is only a suggestion), don't overtighten the bolts. It maybe just an illusion, but one of my carb bodies looks like it may have bowed ever so slighlty, probably as a result of overtightening by the previous owner. Although not the same make at the Z's, I have come across this problem with Amal carbs.
