Z1000A1 - starter motor just spinning

#1 PostAuthor: JohnC » Sun Mar 22, 2009 1:31 pm

Lo all, first post and I'm asking for help :)

Before I take the alternator cover off, is the starter motor just spinning but not engaging a common problem on the A1?

The bike has been off road for a while but I'd like to get it back up and running again. It starts relatively OK with the kicker (Wiseco pistons) but I'd like to use the starter at least when the bike is warm.

tia

Hi John
More than likely the centre bolt has come undone ( common problem ), you can get to it behind the alternator cover, when you tighten it use threadlock
Hope this helps
Paul

Problem worse than feared!!!

Thanks Paul, I just had a look and (yet again!!!) the rotor has came loose as you suggested. This has happened twice in the last couple of years. Both times I've used a new woodruff key, loctite and torqued the rotor mounting bolt to 18 ft-lb, and yet it still comes loose.

Even being an extreme optimist it looks like the rotor is now well and truly bu**ered

I'm thinking I can at least dress up the crank to take another rotor. What do you think?

Dress the rotor to the crank end, with grinding paste........ Get a nice snug fit....... then re torque & more loctite....... on crank end bolt & check 3 x bolts in rotor :!:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Pigford, when I was ordering up a new rotor from Z-Power Dave said I shouldn't use grinding paste. I didn't really get a chance to ask him why not as it was Phil who asked him. I take it you've used this method before to good effect?

Hello John,
as you have found, this a friendly, helpful site.
Can i ask that you introduce yourself, with a few details, in the "New Here" section?

Grinding paste is recommended by people in the know

Probably worried you won't clean it off properly, and it'll get into the engine :!: :!: :!:

This "lapping-in" is a standard practice on close fit items :|

Perhaps someone else with an Engineering degree can put us out of our misery :?:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Hi Phil, I was waiting till I had some recent photos of the Zed, now in bits though

I'll pop in next week with some photos and the spec (of the bike not me :D) once I've repaired the rotor.

Lapping it sounds entirely reasonable to me Pigford. I'm all out of any other ideas to stop this reoccurring tbo. ChrisNI mentioned the starter clutch boss being worn might be the problem but I'm not really sure what he means. Perhaps I need to resurrect this thread for more info.

Any way I'm £160 lighter with a new rotor on the way so heres hoping I can fix the problem for good.

Sorry, I didn't see this post earlier - it's quite likely that the bolt's not looseing and letting the rotor slip, it's the other way round. The rotor's breaking off the taper and snapping the key, spinning and loosening the bolt. The key really only positions it, it's too flimsy to do anything else that's why they did away with it and the bolt just secures it, it's the fit on the taper that should really hold it on. If it keeps coming off it's because the starter clutch is worn on the boss on the big sprocket at the back - it doesn't have to be really even visible - then the rollers catch and snap it off the taper. It is more of a problem with high compression because starting a high comp motor tends to wear the starter clutch more so this is more likely to happen. Try and get a new complete starter clutch it should fix it. I had the same problem about eight years ago - hasn't happened since.
